I love the caged system it makes perfect sense and I would be lost without it. It's much better than learning hundreds of different types of the same chord.

You may get a litle confused unless you remember its the CAGED system - not cage lol

It is incredible how guitarists can play for years and yet have no comprehension of this kind of stuff. guitar theory is incredibly straight forward but sometimes I think guitar books are designed to keep you buying more books rather than actually help you understand it!

Key Signatures tell us how many sharps or flats are in a key and what notes are to be played as a sharp or flat in a key, to understand Key Signatures we first need to study 'Keys' and 'Scales'

The 2 main scales we use are Major and Minor which both contain 8 notes, staring and ending on the same name e.g. C Major stars on a C note and ends on a C note

To discover the remaining 6 notes and more importantly how we got all 8 notes making the scale, we need to explore what is known as Intervals.

An Interval is the distance between 2 notes, if we look at the full musical scale for guitar know as the Chromatic Scale we get;

(example 1)

C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B C

The distance between each note is called a semi-tone or in the USA a (half step) so from C# up to D would be a semi-tone

The distance between C# up to D# would be a tone in the USA a (whole step)

Basically if you go up by 1 (.i.e. C# to D) its a semi-tone or up 2 (.i.e. C# to D#) its a tone

Now this is where it can get tricky - the notes with the sharps(#) are actually the same as a note value as a note with a flat (b)

Lets take the same scale but use the flat(b) perspective;

(example 2)

C Db D Eb E F Gb G Ab A Bb B C

Instead of looking at going up see it as going down, if you are on D and go down a semi-tone you come to the C# on the Chromatic Scale in example 1 but a Db on Chromatic Scale in example 2

If you start on F and go down a tone you come to D# on the Chromatic Scale in example 1 but a Eb on the Chromatic Scale in example 2

Which ever way you look as it a sharp will be the same note as a flat

.i.e. C# is the same note as a Db (the same sound for both names)

This is known as Enharmonic.

Notice between the E & F and B & C there are no sharps/flats as the distance is only a semi-tone between these sets of notes

Was it anything like this? .....
