I believe Rode do a decent one for around 80 notes or so. I have no personal experience of that particular mic, but I trust Rode to produce good kit. YMMV.

The Rode NT1 is quite good for the price. It's a bit noisy compared to, say, an AKG414. But the 414 is over £400 quid.

I think the AKG C3000 is also a good condenser mic for the price.

I've used all of these mics for spoken word recording.

Edit: The new adverts for the Rode NT1 claim that the "new model" is very quiet. I'd expect that we have the older versions here.

You can probably pick up a s/h Sennheiser ME-80 shotgun on (i.e.) Ebay for less than 100. I've had one for a while and use it for everything that doesn't plug in (vocals, blues harp, sax, etc.). Needs a battery ... Canford do a replacement, or you can series-stack calculator batteries to provide the necessary 6 volts. Best mic I've got reproduction-wise so worth a look. Not made since 1992-ish so s/h the most likely option.

Agree on the AKG C3000, it's a cracker of a mic for theprice - large diaghragm too so more likely to be better for vocals I'd think. I've had good results with it anyhow. Bill leader (google him, he know a thing or two) recommended a load of SE Electronics mics for both vocals and acoustic instruments. They're at:

Check out the Behringer C3 - lots of good reviews and sub £80

I used a brilliant Behringer one a couple of years ago- it may have been a C3. The producer said it was about £40, which would probably indicate that mic as well.
