* What is your current amp? Laney VC30
* How much did you pay? about £500, but they come A LOT cheaper now [£300-350]
* How long have you had it? 3 years
* What environment is it normally played (IE home, studio, stage)? All environments! It deffinitely suffers in hot nightclubs packed with people and lights. It has had a tendency to blow a fuse in these situations, but that's just cause it's running hot.
* Has it gone wrong - if so how many times and what reasons

Well, about a year after i bought it the HT fuse kept blowing, and i was getting a crackling/clunking sound through the speakers, signalling it was time replace the output valves (cheap stock TADs). I bought a set of Harma EL84s from Watford Valves, only to find find that Laney had wired the amp only to accept cheap chinese valves (Pin 1 had been wired as the HT junction [i.e. isolated from the other pins], whereas the new Harmas had Pins 1 & 2 connected so that 300V was being presented to the grid). So I opened up the amp, and lifted all four HT junctions off pin 1 and onto pin 8. This worked a treat, but unfortunately meant that the amp was running hot, and has worn down the valves in about a year. I'm now faced with replacing all four output valves again, but this time i'll have to add smoothing resistors in to curb the voltage going through the valves.

It's a fantastic amp, hence the reason i'm willing to put so much time and money into it, the clean sound sparkles, and it dirties up nicely, but if you need something to rely 100% on, it's probably not your ideal amp.

What is your current amp? Orange Rocker 30 Combo and Tiny Terror Head/1x12 cab
* How much did you pay? #600/300/190
* How long have you had it? 10/22/22 months
* What environment is it normally played (IE home, studio, stage)? Home, practice studio and stage
* Has it gone wrong - if so how many times and what reasons? Rocker combo developed microphonic valves very quickly, but replaced them and no problems since.

I play a Les Paul Standard, and the combination through Orange amps, especially the bridge pickup, is fantastic.

Marshall AVT 50

3 years old
£299 (I think)
Used at home

Fan buzzes when switched on (30 seconds or so) worse when weather is cold. Can sometimes "spike" - suddenly go loud and crackle around (looks footswitch related).

Fender Blues Junior
6 Months
£360
Used at home
No Problems

Epiphone Valve Junior
2 Months
£72
Home and Anywhere I Roam
No problems.

Hello Richard - really good idea to do this. Looking at the posts so far I reckon my old Fender might be living proof of older amps having better components and build quality than modern day models?
I was intending to replace it, but having read the responses so far I'm rather shocked to see so many suffering from poor reliability.
Current amp is a Fender Deluxe 85 1 x 12 combo
I paid £249 for it second hand - quite a bit I guess in those days
Had to double check this - I bought it way back in 1995! \:o
Home now, but practiced and gigged with it quite a bit for the first 6 years
Not until the last couple of months. Suddenly get a loud buzz from nowhere - i.e. no problems for about half an hour then loud buzz for a few seconds then the buzz dissapears. Also get an ocassional 'pop' when turning the amp off - may be nothing more sinister than a dirty old switch though?
