Hi
I've been playing guitar for about 4 or 5 years and i don't want to stop but i keep geetting more interested in playing bass all the time. My dad has an old bass which he found in his attic, it looks like an old fender with a different neck or a copy. It's really bashed up but atleast it plays and stays in tune. When i play bass a mainly funk and slap bass like the chilli peppers. I am probably going to buy a bass guitar5 after my birthday at the end of the month. I was wondering if you had any advise about getting a new bass for about £180 - £230? It would be good if it was five string asswell.
Thanks

Hi Michael
A bit surprised that no one has had a stab at answering this one yet...
This is going to sound like a broken record, but the best advise is to decide on your budget (and it looks like you have) then go visit some music shops. Take no notice of the badge on the headstock. Just play as many as you can in your price range and find the one that YOU really like.
That's how I chose my bass guitar... 25 years ago! And it's still the only bass guitar I've got. Admittedly, it cost a little more than your projected budget, but I didn't care what model or make. I just drove the guys in the shop up the wall until I got the one I wanted
More recently (last September) my elder daughter decided she would like to learn. I dragged her along to the Leeds guitar Show, and we found a secondhand Tanglewood Rebel (4 string) going for £80. There were also a couple of Yamahas on the same stall at the same price, but the Tanglewood was simply the nicer guitar.
For slap playing, it's an advantage to have a couple of pickups and active electronics. It's also a huge advantage to have some sort of scalloping in the body, mainly so you can get your fingers under the strings to get that distinctive pull-off "pop".
Other than that, I'm reluctant to make "recommendations" about which brand or what model.
Hope this is some help.
Paul.

Sounds like you should buy my 5 string Rockbass streamer standard which would be a lot less than £180. But it's second hand of course.
Sorry, only partially serious here. I've heard of people playing slap on Warwick style basses, but believe that they are not the standard choice.
Edit: Just in case, it's one of these, but it's blue.

How about this prototype by Ibanez. Not content to give us seven string and eight string guitars, they've decided to make a bass/guitar hybrid.

It's a 30" scale, so can be considered a short necked bass or a long necked guitar. The strings are closer together, like a guitars, so can only be played with a pick i imagine. Definitely appeal to those who can't decide if they are bassists or guitarists.

I would say you need to go out and see what plays and feels good to you. Also the sound..There are a lot of Bases out there its best to try and narrow down maybe the style you like in a bass and the color..Believe it or not this gives you a great start. Otherwise you will go crazy looking. also figure how much you want to spend..a 4 string I think would be your best bet..
What ever you but invest in a local luthier and have it set up for you so right out of the gate its done...and they just enjoy playing...
Good Luck its fun looking. I do it all the time. You never know what you find..Also, check out local **** shops if you have them were you live.

my advice for buying guitars extends to basses too. go a tour of your local shops and try as many of them as you can. don't be afraid to try models outside your budget either, as it will give you an idea of what else is out there - no point walking away with a squire p-bass when there might be something twice as good for an extra £50 or something.
there's a company out there that makes licenced musicman guitars, but can't remember their name. they do 4- and 5-string basses too.

I would by a tokai - they have the best guitars and you can find second hand ones for cheap. Better than any fender I've tried.

OLP is the name of the company that makes licenced MusicMan guitars - they're not bad either, well worth checking out and a good basis for upgrading in future too.
I'd also look out for some second hand Yamahas, ideally a BB series but if you like a rocky look then the RBXs are OK. Worth budgeting to replace the tuners and pickups though.
Alternatively, Ibanezs as mentioned above and older Arias are worthwhile - Aria Integras in particular, at least the Japanese ones.
