Hi, looking for a small mixing desk to use at home. Really just to play around with, mix guitar, mic, CD player etc together so I can either push them all into one amp or connect to PC for recording. I don't want to spend more than £100, doesn't need to be too complex. I've looked at Behringer 802, Peavey PV6 and Soundcraft notepad reviews but they mostly say they are crap. Does anyone know of a fairly decent unit that would fit the bill without going over the £100 please

I have a Tapco Mix 50 that does a great job for around half your budget...

Small footprint too, so it doesn't take up lots of real estate on your desk.

If you want to max-out your budget, the 12 channel version is a penny short of £100...

I use the Behringer 1002FX and it is very nice for mic, acoustic and other clean guitar etc. For electric, I either go via a multi FX, through my Cube or through my Yale and mic up with a reasonable Shure mic. The on-board effects are not too digital and harsh with easy blending, I know some people complain of noise but I have never experienced that. I do use a separate sound card (C-Media) and not the on-board chip.

I have a Xenyx 802 and it isn't crap, it's good value (about £60 IIRC). But I only really use it to phantom-power a capacitor mic.

Agreed, the Behringer Xenyx mixers are definitely not crap! I had a 1202FX that I traded with thetenthplace. I had some good results with it, and I don't think Andy has any complaints... ;\)

Thanks, still no nearer to deciding though. I don't know much about mixers yet and need to know a couple of things please. If you have a mixer like the tapco 50 which has one mic/line i/put and two stereo i/puts - can the stereo i/ps be used as 4 mono i/ps? Presumably you can connect up to 5 mono sources (not including the tape inputs)but obviously the two that form a stereo pair can't be adjusted seperately. The other thing is does the output always have to be stereo or could all 5 channels be outputed to a single mono jack that could then connect to the input of a single amplifier? I also take it that the mic/line inputs have a gain adjustmenr whereas the stereo ones don't?

You could use the stereo inputs as a pair of mono and work the balance control to level them up a bit. But really, using each socket as a mono (by part wiring a stereo jack) will be easier to control. Also, mine do not have any EQ, just volume, balance and effects level.
I find recording drums and sometimes bass from what I have knocked together in Fruity Loops to work best. Then its a matter of guitar, vocals, flute and any other bits to finish it off. Using the mixer to add in basic effects at recording time means my singer (she who must be obeyed) gets a fair idea of what the mix sounds like as she records. Then I use the post production facilities in Audacity for a bit of extra polish. Tip: With effects less is best 'cos you can't take them off later.

Thanks Brian. Another question comes to mind now. Are most of these small mixers analogue output? I want one to either connect several analogue sources (instruments, mics, tapes etc)to a single amp or to the mic input socket on my laptop so I guess a digital mixer is defo not what I want.

Im liking the look of the tapco mix 60 if that will fit the bill.

It's not a good idea to connect the two outputs together into a mono socket. Better just to crank the balance controls all the way over to one side and just use a single output from the mixer.

You don't need a digital mixer, and the Tapco Mix 60 would do the job.

Where in West Yorkshire are you? I'm in Normanton (near Wakefield). You're welcome to pop round and take a look at the setup I use (including the Tapco Mix 50). It might give you some ideas.

Paul.
