Hate to burst your bubble guitarmonkey, but you might want to take a look at this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Satriani

As you can see, Steve Vai was in fact one of many students taught by Joe Satriani.

Second that, just read a cracking article in a well know guitar magazine relating to Steve Vai, he was indeed a student of Satriani. Made a good read!

Satriani indeed did teach Mr Vai amongst others... I think the list includeds Kirk Hammet as well!

Satriani has been playing Ibanez guitars for as long as ive been a fan (1990 ish) and maybe a few years before this.
His range of Signature guitars include:
JS100 (This is the cheap Korean Made Model)
JS1000
JS1200
JS1600

Satch also uses/ endorses the following:
Vox Pedals
Peavey Amps
Planet Waves items (straps, picks)

I have heard a rumour that he nonger uses the Peavey amps that he helped design, but has gone back to using Marshalls!

Satriani is easily my favourite guitar player. Some of his songs border on levels of genius.

Glanced over wikipedia article and I was like wtf, when I realized Joe Satriani played with Deep Purple for some time! Also, video: link
