Hi
My son has the marshall AVT150X combo and is looking to add an extension speaker. We believe the AVT112 is the purpose made cab to match the combo but we would like to know if we can use any of the other marshall cabs such as the 1922 or 1936 which are 2 X 12 units with 8 ohms impedance. Thanks for reading.

The 1936 is a great cabinet, I would stick my neck out and say a much better build* than the AVT112 cabinet, and if using for hard rock/ metal will give a much better result. The cab does support 150 watts mono at 8ohms, but I have never used as an extension cab for a combo so cannot comment. * With respect to build I have heard that the newer cabs (last couple of years) are now made in China, not sure if that has afffected the build quality though. Mine was made in England about 7 years ago and is like a little tank!. Can I ask what the reason for getting an additional cabinet is? If you have money to spend have you considered getting a new setup completely, sell the AVT on e-bay etc.

Hi, sorry for chiming in late on this...
...in fact I really dont know how late I'm chiming in because they still havn't fixed the forums yet, I dont see any timestamps on any posts if they weren't posted within a day.
Anyway, build quality is a good reason to upgrade to a 'pro' level cab like the 1936. But not nearly as good a reason as SOUND.
The AVT series is great value for money, I myself own the AVT 150 combo. For the amount I play guitar these days it doesn't make any sense for me to upgrade anymore at this point.
BUT, thats what the AVT series is, its good value, its good for its price. This is where the 'This cab is specifically designed for the AVT150 combo' thing comes from - its got nothing to do with producing a better match soundwise, its about producing a better match for the consumer that wants a cab at the price of the AVT extension cab. I guess their marketing folks decided that most folks who have an AVT budget for amps also have an AVT budget for cabs. Also makes a nicer markup for them selling chipboard cabs with budget speakers.
This is not my experience. I find that most players want to buy a combo, then upgrade to a real cab so that a bit later on, they can upgrade to a real valve head too!
You have my word that the AVT combo comes alive when you plug it into a real speaker, the one thats in the combo (and the AVT extension cab) isn't *terrible* but it does hold back the amp. At low living-room volumes my AVT sounds better through a real cabinet than a DSL100. At proper volumes the DSL is better of course.
The AVT extension cab does nothing! Well...technically it makes your amp put out 150 watts because it'll be running at 4 ohms (right now, your DSL150 is probably running close to 75 watts because it has a 8 ohm load) but thats only 3dB more sound at most, and if you're lucky you might get a wee bit more LF from the speakers coupling.
Seriously, get the 1936! Or a 1960, or any other pro level cab you can get your hands on! Its a better investment if you have to sell it, you'll never want to upgrade it (might want to change it for something else but there is no upgrade) and you're not throwing money away on more semi-pro gear thats just made to a budget.
Enjoy!
