In an idle moment I was thinking it would be a bit of fun to have a 12/6 double-neck guitar, but they're hard to get hold of and pretty expensive. So I was wondering if it would be remotely feasible to get two identical cheap second hand guitars, saw a chunk off both and stick them together. Then buy a replacement neck and bridge for the 12-string. Could this work? How would you fix them together? Or have I just gone mad??

I think it's totally doable and probably has been done before, but in terms of time and effort, you might be better building from scratch/parts or just buying one ready made...

Its the electrics I'd be confused about.

A double pole, single throw switch should do it and the push on, push off type would be very convenient. That would allow you to substitute one set of pickups for the other and use the standard controls.
The other thing to bear in mind with an electric 12 string is the bridge. 12 saddle TOMs are available at a price or double cut saddles on a standard bridge are alright if you are prepared to compromise a lot on intonation.
Strangely, if I were doing this I'd look at a pair of Gibson Signature SGs and do something to balance the two heavy necks, or what about a pair of Swift Wickeds?

Sounds like a fun job, anyway.

as far as fixing them together is concerned, you could biscuit joint them together with a strong animal glue, i used to be a joiner, so any further questions please ask :-)

Mad plan now abandoned as I've managed to secure a wonderfully hideous double-neck Flying V off the Bay for £200.

Sounds very do-able to me... but pick lightweight guitars, as the combined weight would be a problem. If you want to be really clever, make a demountable like this! http://www.guitar-collector.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=255

I was suprised to find recently that you can actually get a 6+6 double-neck Strat - seems mad, but means you can have two different tunings.
