Many years ago as a teenager, we had to have certain LPs to have what is now known as 'Street cred.' Black Sabbath Vol 4 as an example was a must have. Which album is still a must have? Over to you.

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd, The Wall - Pink Floyd A Night at the Opera - Queen A Day at the Races - Queen Led Zeppelin 1, 2, 3 and untitled - Led Zeppelin Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits Kind of Blue - Miles Davis Milestones - Miles Davis Headhunters - Herbie Hancock Heavy Weather - Weather Report Thriller - Michael Jackson Bad - Michael Jackson Abbey Road - The Beatles SMiLE - Brian Wilson Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys War of The Worlds - Jeff Wayne
I could go on for a very long time with must have albums. I found out before Christams roughly how much I'd spent on music over the last 10 years and was horrified to say the least.

Great list, Dan!
If I were going to make a collection of absolute classics as the basis for a really good record collection, I'd take the Zeppelin, Floyd, Miles and Queen recommendations from Dan's list, plus Pet Sounds, and then add:
Miles Davis: Bitches Brew (or "In A Silent Way" if Bitches Brew is a bit too way out for you )
Television: Marquee Moon
Beatles: EVERYTHING!!!
Radiohead: OK Computer
Nick Drake: Bryter Later or Pink Moon - your choice...
Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland
Robert Johnson: Complete recordings (only 29 tracks, but they're ESSENTIAL)
Deep Purple: Machine Head
Joni Mitchell: Blue
John Martyn: Solid Air
Elbow: Seldom Seen Kid
The Allman Brothers Band: Live At Fillmore East
Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Steve Reich: Music For 18 Musicians
Some good compilations of stuff from some of the really influential record labels: Motown, Chess, Stax, Sun etc.
Elvis: Sun sessions.
Jeff Buckley: Grace
...then I'd sit down and have a think about some more...

^ I did think about it, but I think there are better blues-rock albums, and I've never been a huge Clapton fan.
That said, it was very influential.
Good call on "Back in Black" though

Come on there are loads of absolute essentials out there. No one has dared to mention Abba yet Ho Hum!
