Hello,

I started playing just under two months ago. I'm being taught chords and simple chord combination songs at the moment. Haven't started playing single note melodies yet but would like to as this would help me to start reading music again after twenty years' absence.

I am in a bit of a rut at the moment. After learing how to play A, A7, Am,C,D,E,Em,G and G7, I'm now struggling with moving between them. I really find it difficult putting my fingers down for C from another chord. I might have to move from a classical to an accoustic.

This week I haven't enjoyed my practice as much, but it's part of learning a new instrument.

I hope I can keep at it!

Hi Debutant.
A quick tip. When you play a G chord. get used to using only your middle, ring and pinky fingers. It will make changes to C and F shapes much easier.

Oh, and welcome.

Brian

Hi Debutant and welcome.

During my first lessons I was shown there isn't a "correct" way to do things in many instances. There's often a normal way and a slightly easier way. As Brian has highlighted there are a different ways of "fingering" the G chord, the method used may well depend on the chords your coming from or going to. A good tutor should point this out to you at some point.

Keep at it though, it will become easier!

Thank you for your replies. I will try the G chord tip out. I think the main problem I'm encountering is that I've got fairly small hands and short fingers. Stretching my fingers on a classical is proving a bit hard. My tutor's gone through tips on how to remember the moves between the chords and practising gently moving between them over and over without strumming, so that the pattern becomes lodged. It's something that will happen eventually. For the moment I think I'm just going to have to accept that landing on C from another chord is a handicap I'll have to put up with until I get it right. In the meantime, I'm trying not to neglect the other chords and changing between them!

I managed to get somewhere with my chord changes, but only six weeks into lessons, my tutor introduced barre chords. I didn't feel I'd had time to get used to changing between chords and strumming different patterns. It took me two weeks to understand what a barre chord meant. The 'root' note meant nothing to me to begin with. I scarcely got used to E form chords when I was shown the A form chords. I ended up playing the E form for the A form. The lesson where I was asked to 'play me a barre chord in G major, D minor' etc. was embarassing. I ended up not knowing what I was doing. I realise you have to learn new things to make any progress, but how they're introduced is vital to avoid crushing your confidence.
