Right then, I'm rubbish at films- have barely seen any 'classics', so I'm starting a thread of discussion of what we all think are the essential, must-see movies.

My classic choices would have to include Blues Brothers, The Truman Show and Memento for a start. Not to mention The Dark Knight \:\)

Over to you! What are your top watches for a good night in?

There's a few decent ones, I'd thoroughly recommend seeing This Is It! It's a real insight into what the concerts would have looked like, whether you're an MJ fan or cynical of whether the concerts would have actually happened. The scale of the concerts was definitely something to behold. If they had actually taken place they would truly been awesome.

Depending on the mood...

Emotional... Cinema Paradiso, Shawshank Redemption
Thriller... The Usual Suspects, The Prestige
Sci-Fi/Action... Blade Runner, Aliens
Horror... Alien
Comedy... Trading Places
Ciematic Experience... Avatar in 3D (yeah, I know...)
And the winner is... The Lord of the Rings trilogy

Blade Runner- genre defining intelligent sci-fi

The Matrix- something of a victim of its own success and hype- the visuals don't have anything like the impact they did when the film was released because they've been endlessly ripped off since. More intelligent sci-fi that changed the game for cinema- philosophy, spirituality, enormous guns, killer robots and @ss-kicking kung-fu action. What more could you want from a film?

The Big Lebowski- utterly ridiculous, catchphrase-ridden, laugh-out-loud hilarious comedy.

Withnail and I- see above.

Lord of the Rings trilogy- perfect cinema, near as dammit. Epic.

Star Wars ep.IV-VI (the original trilogy)- see above. Dialogue can't hold a candle to Tolkien ("flyin' through hyperspace ain't like dustin' crops kid- you could bounce too close to a star or fly right in to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick. Strap yourselves in, I'm about to make the jump to hyperspace!" but in terms of special effects it splits film history like BC and AD. What a great movie.

The Lives of Others- it's german, but don't let that put you off! Hard to summarise, but well worth watching.

Rear Window- classic Hitchcock.

12 Angry Men- great courtroom drama.

This Is Spinal Tap- required viewing for all musicians. Your band will never be the same.

Almost Famous- a personal favourite of mine- great dialogue, great story, great soundtrack (original songs by director Cameron Crowe's wife, Nancy Wilson, formerly of Heart). One of the best music movies ever.

Die Hard- the action movie.

Wall-e- don't hate- it's a fantastic looking film with a great storyline that stays just the right side of preachiness. What's more, it's practically a silent film for long stretches, while still being easy viewing for all ages.

Breakfast at Tiffanys- Just a great story. A "chick flick" with brains that you can like without shame.

(500) Days of Summer- another "chick flick", but nothing like the normal Sandra Bullock / J-Lo toss you'd expect from the rom-com genre. A movie that invites you to dwell on the minutiae of the "what did I do wrongs" of a relationship that didn't work, which is totally appropriate to the "girl dumps boy who doesn't understand why" theme.

It's A Wonderful Life- ...but save it for Christmas.

I also have a theory that says that if a film has Philip Seymour Hoffman in it, it's going to be pretty good. Try that one at Blockbusters...

Some great titles there for you.

How about 'Black Hawk Down' for a modern war film. I saw it recently on TV for the first time and it floored me. Started watching it late, half expecting to fall asleep but I was glued to the screen for the whole thing. Awesome movie.

Another Ridley Scott title to add to Alien and Blade Runner already mentioned.

Ahhh, how could I have forgotten The Big Lebowski, that's like my all time favourite movie! The first time I saw that, i'd only really seen John Goodman playing really charactured roles and thought he was brilliant in it.

How about Patch Adams, that's a classic pretty much anything with Robin Williams in it rocks, but I particularly like Patch Adams, really touching, (based on a) true story.

Here's a few of my Favorites.

The Big Lebowski - Like English Bob said, its a Quoters film.... Dude
Withnail & I - Hardest Drinking Game... EVER
Almost Famous - I Too just love this film. and Zooey Deschenel looks Stunning in this film \:\)
Inglorious Bastards
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Hangover - My favorite Comedy of the naughties!
Toy Story 1&2 - This is my ALL time faorite pair! You can safly say that they set the benchmark for the new wave of animation!
Superbad - Another Quote ridden Film!
Night At The Museum 1&2 - Ricky Gervais has my surname in this film.... Yeah that makes it extra cool!!!
Natural Born Killers - quite a screwd up film... I love it \:\)
I Am Sam - This is a Must See, Sean Penns best film i think, and a real tear jerker.
Revenge of the Nerds - American Pie has nothing on this film!

And my Guilty Plesure

Camp Rock - Like Hannah Montana but Better!

This is just a few of the films I love to watch. I have a rather LARGE film collection. and I could go on adding to this list of great films forever! (I'm still adding films as I type this bit).

As you can see there is no Horror Films in that list. Just a personal note that I think Horror Films are a waste of time! the majority of the time they make so many sequels of them they overstay their welcome (Saw, Halloween, Scream etc.). and althought I ejoyed these films i can only ever watch them once or twice!

For me, a big part of the problem with horror films is that they're so formulaic for the most part. I guess it's part of the fun for some people, but I find it boring. I don't often find them scary either.

If I had to pick a horror movie, I think I'd go for "Event Horizon". I watched it on my own, late at night and it properly sh*t me up.

I included Alien as horror, but I certainly wouldn't call myself a horror fan. Films like Saw have no appeal to me at all.

But for sheer suspense and the coolest monster ever, Alien has to be a must see movie \:\)

Never been a big fan of the Alien type of film either. I know people say that any film fans collection will consist of atleast: Star Wars, Alien and Terminator - but none of these films are my "Cuppa Tea". Nor are they in my collection!
