Read the book.

Ditto "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Oscar or no Oscar, I thought it was a rubbish adaptation of the novel.

I can only think of one film that I liked better than the book of the same (where I had read the book and could compare, that is), and that was "The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas", which is well worth watching too...

As you can see there is no Horror Films in that list. Just a personal note that I think Horror Films are a waste of time! the majority of the time they make so many sequels of them they overstay their welcome (Saw, Halloween, Scream etc.). and althought I enjoyed these films i can only ever watch them once or twice!

For me, a big part of the problem with horror films is that they're so formulaic for the most part. I guess it's part of the fun for some people, but I find it boring. I don't often find them scary either.

If I had to pick a horror movie, I think I'd go for "Event Horizon". I watched it on my own, late at night and it properly sh*t me up.

I know what you mean. I can't think of any horror movie that actually scared me. Most of them make me laugh, if anything. I remember watching the Evil Dead when it first came out and laughed my **** off. It was just a gross, over the top, tongue in cheek comedy, as far i could tell. Couldn't understand why everybody else was hiding behind their hands. Same goes for the Exorcist when i finally got to see it. It was so ridiculous (and so parodied by then) i just chuckled the whole way through it. I thought the little girl was just the funniest thing i'd ever seen (like some Paul Whitehouse/Harry Enfield comedy creation, with a lot of witty, instantly quotable catch phrases).

A lot of these 'splatter' style horror movies, such as the recent SAW films just can't be taken seriously. All you can do is sit there with a big grin on your face and wait for the next, laugh out loud, over the top death sequence.

I agree that films like Alien are far more scary than any of the 'horror' movies that have been made. I find some scenes in films like Schindlers List and other 'thoughtful' movies about real life suffering far more upsetting than anything i've ever seen in a horror movie.

Evil Dead was a comedy, but you're right, nobody really got it, so they re-made it as Evil Dead 2 and hammed it up even more.

I remember going to see Spiderman 2 with a friend of mine who had also seen the Evil Dead movies, and being the only people in the cinema laughing our @rses off at the sequence when Dr Octopus' tentacles kill all the doctors in the operating theatre, which is pure Evil Dead re-make! Everyone else was in stony silence.

... on the topic of comic-book related films, can I also add "a Kevin Smith film" to the list- Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy or Dogma will do.

Also on the subject of comic book films, Frank Millers Sin City is a brilliant film!

Oh, definitely Sin City. Haven't watched that in ages.

Must get Gladiator on bluray as well - I have it on VHS but it'd look stunning in hidef..

The Shining- YES! The only film ever to properly scare me. Brilliant.

I'm currently watching Austin Powers: Goldmember on film4- I love this film. So low brow...
