Even better- get the Hendrix BBC sessions CD and hear the whole segment, including Lulu's extremely patronising links (complete with piercing "accidental" feedback from Jimi) and a very cool live "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)".

Apparently, Lulu only wanted him on the show because he'd been on Dusty Springfield's show on "the other side" a few weeks before and got good ratings. She didn't like him, she didn't like his music, and he knew it. The only reason they were playing "Hey Joe" at all was because it was his oldest, "safest" single, and they wanted him to play it as "safe" as possible- the version of "Hey Joe" you hear is closer to the way the Experience were playing it live at that point- much more distorted, much more "rock" than the single version. The whole episode was as much an exercise in pi$$ing Lulu off as it was a tribute to Cream

It's an interesting case study of an early-ish instance of "credible" rock music meeting slickly produced mainstream entertainment.

I wouldn't be in the slightest interested in seeing a "live" performance where the singer was miming.

It's interesting to note the quality of the performances and live sound on Later with Jools Holland. Quite often the live mixes and vocal sounds they get are excellent. And I don't believe any of those artists are miming. It shows that it can be done.

I can't comment on the difficulty of singing and dancing at the same time.

This is my point exactly, Later really showcases bands and doesn't let them mime. I find the sound engineering is always pretty good as well, I never understood how it can be so good for them on BBC2 on a Friday night, yet always appalling on Jonathan Ross on BBC1, even when they had Stevie Wonder on, the sound was terrible (possibly partly because they let JR loose with an electric drum kit for some unknown reason, I don't know what Stevie thought was going to happen there...)

The current popular acts can obviously still play live when they do shows like Later and I'm sure most of the ones that do the dancing as well can do it, but the it's just more convenient for the producers to have it mimed so there is less effort involved. I do personally think it's also a way of cutting costs a lot of the time, For instance the comparison between X factor and American Idol, and Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice. On X Factor, it is the same guy calling the shots as American Idol, but in order to cut the costs of hiring an MD, having the music arranged, hiring a band, getting them sound checked, then doing a live show they just can't be bothered. He's proved they can do it with American Idol, so why not with the British counterpart? Same as with Strictly, there as a fantastic band on that show every week who always play everything live. But what happens when they get the guest artists on... they mime, their band mimes, and it's really obvious. Why they bother when they have such a good band already there is beyond me. I would have thought it would have been the other way round though, the show on the commercial channel is the one cutting the cost of hiring the musicians and having live music, but the Beeb is putting out licence fee to good use and showcasing live music in their shows.

One of my work colleagues used to work for the BBC.

He puts the quality of the sound on Jools Holland down to the skills of the person in charge of the sound on that show. Presumably someone else does the sound on JR.

McCartney played live on X Factor. But I think he was in the minority of the ones I saw this year...

After a bit of a rest installing windows 7 i'm back!

I don't like miming at all, I think if you can't play live then don't.

BUT - I have an awful confession.....I have mimed on stage!

In my defence I got up to play a song with a band which was fine and at the end they got me a big round of applause and the crowd to insist I stayed on stage for the next one - which I didn't know at all. So in an instant I took the desicion to turn the volume knob down and mime.

Funnily enough no one noticed, everyone said how great I was and laughed like anything when I told them what had happened.

Happy days!

Welcome back Andy. You saying that you have mimed has reminded me that i have done such things. Last week my band had a gig in west byfleet and a WMC, and we were playing one of our own songs and i completly forgot the chords to the bridge. so I dumped the volume on the guitar, turned towards the singer so i was side on to the crown and srtummed away. One of our mates had recorded the song on his phone and when we listened back you couldnt realy notice! which is good!

I Guess im just as bad!

Reminds me of an old musicians' joke.

A chap who played clarinet in a wind band needed to take a night off, so he asked a friend to deputise for him at a gig. "But I can't play the clarinet!" the friend protested. "Never mind, we do this all the time: the dep (=deputy) just has to mime along with the rest of the band. There's another clarinetist who'll cover any solos for you, so you won't be noticed. Just remember to collect your fee at the end of the evening."

So the friend reluctantly agreed and went along to the gig with the borrowed clarinet. When the band had all changed into their uniforms and set up on stage, the conductor appeared and bowed to the audience. Much applause. He then turned to the band, lifted his baton for the first number and... silence!

Looking a bit miffed, he tapped his baton on the rostrum and tried again. Again, there was silence.

Clearing his throat, he said, "First number. From the top: 1, 2, 3, 4!" Once again, not a sound emerged from the band.

One of the clarinetists turned to the other and said, "Lot of deps here tonight."

Dave
