They make different sounds. I prefer the J Bass sounds.

I was advised to go to the Lakland bass website and listen to their sound samples. It really helps understand the differences in the typical p-bass and j-bass sound. And, you get high quality sounds to compare the (unless you're a rich so and so) cheaper basses you're probably going to buy.

They also have different necks, with the typical J-bass neck being (if I remember correctly) narrower than the P-bass.

Note that it's often said that a good producer will be able to make a J bass sound like a P bass and vice versa by applying EQ and other processing.

The main differences are the pick-up configurations. A p-bass typically will only have one pick split coil pickup, where as a J bass will usually have 2 single coil pick-ups.

They are also slightly different shapes. The traditional P-bass was a direct transition from a Stratocaster shape. The J bass has a slightly more ergonomic shape, which fits the body a little bit better than the P. The necks are also slightly different sizes, the J bass is usually a bit narrower.

An easy way of hearing the differences in sound comes down to the tone. P basses usually have a simple rounded sound, whereas the J bass has a bit more versatility in tone. The 2nd pick-up nearer the bridge allows more treble frequencies to come through brightens up the sound slightly. The best examples of the differences on songs would probably be anything Motown is generally played on a P bass, and generally slap players tend to go for a J bass, so the earlier larry Graham kinda stuff (hair by Graham Central Station is a good example) is played on a J bass.

It all depends on the style that I'm playing for which I prefer. If I'm slapping then I prefer a J bass, simply because the clicks and pops come out a bit more. Anything Motown or old school soul/R'n'b then I prefer a P. Most rock/pop stuff I prefer a P bass, but just depends on the song, I spend a lot of time on a Schecter Active 5 string which gives me the best of both worlds.
