Ive been searching the web about recording etc for a while now, my only issue was spending money on it. I was sure you can start of recording and having fun for less than £10.

So tonight I went to a well know supermarket and bought a £5.99 desktop mic. Dowlaoded the free audigy software and started recording.

Bear in mind this is my first attempt, comments welcome

Pretty good quality comming from a desktop mic. Some laptops and most PC's have a line in connection, which I have used before now straight from my FX pedals or even the line out on my amp.

Nice bit of guitar work there ;\)

Alternative for electric recording to your pc, a second hand Audio Interface (AI) from eBay (can get them dead cheap) and free software. If you search I believe there are also free amp and pedal software models out there.

I went the cheapish route of an AI and Reaper software (little under £40). Very impressed.

Thanks guys, I am looking at AI interfaces at the moment.

How do you go about getting drums into there. Are there any free drum apps?

I use Sonar for recording. For drums I create a MIDI track using Sonar's piano roll editor. I play it back using a drum SoundFont, and capture the output as an audio track.

This works for me, but there are many other possibilities. For instance if you fancy yourself as a drummer you can buy a set of pads and a drum synth. (Recording a real drumkit is a serious exercise in multiple mic placement, acoustics and mixing.)

At the other extreme, just record the output of a cheapo drum machine!

What outputs do you have off your amp or effect units?

These days quite a few have USB and or Midi outputs - which often gives you a "free" interface for recording.

I've got a Digitech RP350 which has a USB interface, worked really well. The only reason I got myself an M-Audio was the ability to have two working channels (guitar/mic) open at the same time.

Hmm, all my amps are over 15 years old appart from my new fender Champ which you struggle to find anything more than a volume control and input, so no USB there Im affraid. Having meesed around with the new forum jam III and recording through microphone I am leaning towards getting decend dynamic mic, my only worry about that is it cant really be done quietly.
