Hi all,
Firstly this piece of equipment is a very high end pro effects setup which costs over £1000 new. If is purely an effects processor with added management capabilities for building a pro quality guitar rig. It has no OD/ Distortion, no amp speaker modelling etc. How good is it?....Steve Vai has replaced most of his Effects board with one of these!!!
Cost : From £1050 new, £600 - £800 Second Hand (e-bay).
Build Quality: This thing is SOLID. It is that solid that there are youtube videos of a guy driving over one in a 50 tonne russian tank and then showing it still working!
Support: There is a great Forum for this unit, one guy has even written a very detailed white paper on getting it the best setup and how to integrate this thing with most types of amp. There are software updates that can be applied to update the DSPs (Digital Signal Processors) with new and more enhanced effects. There is a third party program that will interface with the G System to allow control and backup using a PC/ MAC.
Key Features: 1. High End Effects. This things has high end pro quality effects, too many to list but the parameters for each make the possibilities endless.
2. Amp Channel Switching. The G System has built in relays which with the correct cable can change your channels on your amps. This allows you to change not only your effects chain but your channel amp in one foot click.
3. Switchable loops. The G system has 4 loops for adding your favourite OD pedals and other effects. These again can be turned on or off in a patch. You leave the pedal always on but turn the loop on or off to bring the pedal in to the chain or out of the chain. In combination with amp switching and the onboard effects, a single patch can control everything.
4. Amp Insert Loop. The G system allows you to capture your amps "pre-amp" section in its own loop within the G system, this allows you build a proper signal chain where your amps gain functions etc can be placed before mod, delay, reverb etc.
5. Floor use or rack mount. The brains of the unit (DSPs, loops etc) are a standard rackmountable unit which comes attached to the underside of the floor unit by default. If you prefer you can unmount the unit and place into a standard 19inch rack and connect to the floor unit with a single control cable.
6. Other features. Midi control, expression and volume pedal integration, built in EQs and Parametric EQs. Stereo output. Realtime tuner.
Ok, Thats just the main features. In honesty this thing is expensive, but as the saying goes..."you get what you pay for" and believe me this unit is amazing. I bought mine secondhand off e-bay and I trust it will last a long time. The quality of my overall sound has increased enourmously and also the level of control over my live setup is made vastly easier... less toe tapping of buttons and more guitar playing!.
My Current Floor Rig based around the G Sys...
If you cannot justify the cost, there is the little brother of this unit, the "G Major" I hear a lot of good things about this on the forums, apparantly the effects are amazing too, the only difference is that this is purely rack based, you will need to purchase a midi floor switching control for live setups. Also this lacks the major control of amps switching and loops. Cost of this is approx £350.
TC Electronics also make an entry level rack based unit called the "G Sharp", I havnt heard too mnay rave reviews about this so I will not comment.
If anyone wants any more info just give me a shout.
