I want to be able to plug in an iPod so I can jam with backing tracks for practice and I need a jack for headphones. (While we're on the subject, what headphones for £50-£70? I've always been a fan of Sennheiser for hi-fi purposes; are there any 'phones that cope particularly well with guitar amps or will pretty much any good quality ones do?)

Hello the eggman - you might also want to consider the Line 6 Spider Jam - sounds like you'd apreciate all the on-board backing tracks, effects and facility for plugging in your Ipod or other MP3 player for other backing tracks. You can also record - about 25 minutes available, which will probably be plenty.
I'm seriously considering getting one of these myself so will let you know if I do.
I would also vouch for the Sennheiser headphones, I've got a pair of the EH 150.
Hope this helps

Bob the Builder is spot on. I tried a Spider Jam in a shop and was very impressed indeed. Just short of cash and space.

Hi Bob the B, I've actually got a Spider Jam and it's a great learning tool. For jamming along I think it's unbeatable. I'm looking for something approaching a traditional blues/rock sound and, like I said on the original post, the Kustom HV30 has an impressive video review and I wondered if anyone had tried one. The Spider Jam is great at what it does and I use it every day, but I thought I'd try to move up a notch. Or sideways, or something! Please feel free to contact me for further info on the Spider Jam.

I've got a Roland Cube 30X and it does almost every thing I want it to and I love it. I think its amp simulations work well and it is easy to set up.
However you say you want to play an Ipod or similar through your amp as well as your guitar. I tried this with my Cube 30X and it was not very good, with quite a lot of distortion, even on the clean settings. I had to use an external pre-amp mixer as the 30X only has one input. I could not get a good enough mix between guitar and other music sources. I didn't pursue it but simply used my hifi amp - 50 Wrms / channel.

Ah that's odd 'cos my Cube 15x has a separate CD/MP3/whatever input and is fine. Even my tiny keyfob mp3 player works great with it if I can remember which combination of the two buttons lowers the output.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. I think I need to think properly about this. I think I'll keep the noodling and jamming separate from the 'serious' stuff.

Sometimes I think there's that there's just too much choice!

Cheers
