Hi guy's,

I’m both new to the forum as well as the world of guitars and am hoping some one can help.

I'm 25 and have always wanted to learn but never really had chance/got round to it, but recently decided sod it, life’s to short, only problem is I have no idea where to start, I'm completely clueless. I've looked at lessons and want to buy a guitar so I can get some but I have no idea what I'm even looking at. I went In to my nearest music store, which is Dawsons in Manchester, yesterday, went upstairs, and just looked at the rack with complete fear, I've literally never picked up a guitar in my life, nor do I know any one who plays that can look for me, but I'm desperate to learn. any suggestions? set up's you can recommend for a beginner? I want something reasonably decent without spending a grand, any you can give I'd really appreciate.

Thanks
Ellie

Probably the first thing you need to decide is how much you DO want to spend. You won't have to spend anything like £1000 to get yourself a reasonable setup.

Acoustic or electric? The basics of technique are pretty much exactly the same, but the sound is very different.

What sort of music do you like? There's a whole range of guitars out there, and some are better suited to certain styles than others, so if you get yourself a guitar that's oriented towards country and western players and try to play thrash metal, you might not get the sound you want...

If you're looking at taking guitar lessons, you might be as well to find a teacher you like first, then seek their advice and guidance on what to buy and where from...

I think electric.

I like Rock and Roll, some punk.

Go into the shop and tell the salesman what type of music you like then get HIM to play it for you. You'll then be ablr to tell what you like by listening.

Jacktlad is right. But a couple of things that may help.

Dont buy one of those starter packs where you get the guitar, amp, strap etc.

As a begginer you would be better off spending more on the guitar than the amp.

Look on youtube at your favourite bands and see if you can tell what guitars and amps they use, if you cant tell just post the links here. From that we can identify the guitar and or suggest alternatives etc.

I'll be honest, when starting out the sound isn't going to make that much of a diferance. What you should look for is somthing to keep you interested! Get a guitar you like the look of that isnt poorly made and an amp with some effects (Line6 seem to be the best at these). Eventuly as you get better you will want to upgrade these anyway as your ears get trained to what sounds good and what doesn't!

If i were to start learning the guitar now but with the knowledge of guitars and amps i have, My starter pack would be!

guitar: Epiphone Les Paul

Amp: Line6 Spider IV

and the accesories:
Tuner
Guitar Book
Picks

And then a guitar lead and a strap!

but knowing me I have expensive tastes, lol, I think its a les paul, but no clue which one.

I'd agree with MacPhee to an extent.
A Les Paul style guitar is likely to be very versatile but I've had too many bad Epiphones in my hands to suggest that brand. You might do better to locate a Vintage brand V100 model.
Budget versions of the equally famous Stratocaster style of guitar vary a lot in quality but the best budget ones seem to be the Cort G series and the Yamaha Pacifica series. Some people find these more comfortable to play as they are shaped to your body.
I use a little Roland Cube 15X Amp for practice and they are very well made. The 20X version has more variety of sounds than mine. Also well respected are the Peavey Vypyr range which have lots of sound options and also seem reliable.
Getting the shop guy to go through the options will give you the best ideas and sitting (or standing) with guitars that you like the look/sound of will probably suggest the one you can learn on in a relaxed way.
If in doubt, come back here and ask. We never tire of giving advice.

It is indeed a Les Paul in the video. There are cheaper alternatives to a "real deal" Les Paul (which WILL cost you £1000 and more) though... Epiphone, Vintage, Burny, Tokai...

Whatever you go for, make sure you leave room in your budget for a good quality amp, leads and a strap- your sound is only as good as the worst thing that contributes to it, and a poor amp (and even poor quality leads, believe it or not) can mean that you don't get the best out of your guitar.

The only Les Pauls i have tried is a Gibson and a £400 Epiphone, so i cant really comment on a CHEAP Les Paul. But it all depends on how much you want to spend.
