Ah the Les Paul. So im thinking you should lean towards guitars with humbucker pickups maybe. You could get les paul copies but lets start looking at alternatives.

This guitar http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/84621 has humbuckers, is versatile, made from mahogany same as the LP, has a rosewood fingerboard is a good make etc,,,

anyone else got any good alternatives?

Im not so hot on new amps more of a vintage valve myself but I have heard the Vox valvtronics may be good for you http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/78308

Thats a Strat, alright. Fender have 3 basic productions. There are the Squier range, made in the Far East to budget prices. They are okay but not better than other brands' copies of similar prices. Then there are the Fender 'Standard' which are made in Mexico and probably the best value, ranging in price from around £450. Top of the pile are the American made models that start at around £1000.
The fact is, you would be paying quite a bit for the name and in each price range there are better alternatives from many brands.
Another problem with the Stratocaster is that it is so easy to upgrade that the basic look can be hiding all sorts of expensive extras. The 'pure' sound is best thought of as somewhere between Hank Marvin and the typical country twang.
I hope my anti-strat bias is not showing too much and it does not extend to the many 'super-strats' that are around these days. Dev linked to one of the most popular of them and there are good examples from Cort, Ibanez, Jackson, LTD and others.
The choices are almost endless, I'm afraid.

Brian

While there *is* a difference in the sound of various different guitar designs depending on all sorts of factors (pickups, types of wood, scale length from bridge to nut etc), there really isn't a chalk-and-cheese difference between guitars, and many of the differences would be hard for a beginner player to recognise.

As much as anything else, you need a guitar that looks cool and feels comfortable to play- hangs right on a strap and isn't so heavy that it's uncomfortable to play for long periods.

Ok now from some one who is bias towards strats

Yep the price is good. Mex strats are nice, but like all guitars each one is different. Why is he selling it? The only thing a strat wont do well is heavy distortion the single coils are not really up to it, but it will do nearly all other genres very well. I think the strat is routed underneath to accept a humbucker pick-up? If so you can add a humbucker later to get more of a metal tone if needed. All in all a very respectable guitar that will see you through to intermediate level and cover the musical styles you like.

If you try the guitar and like how it sounds and feels (and looks- not everyone is in to purple guitars...), it should be a much better beginner guitar than many people get.

Strats are very versatile guitars that sound good in a whole range of contexts- like Blues_Dev says, the perception of strats is that they're a little out of their element in heavy rock and metal, but there are plenty of famous hard rockin' strat users that give the lie to that- Ritchie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Gary Moore, Billy Corgan... You won't get quite the same level of grunge or sustain as you might with a Les Paul, but with the right combination of guitar, amp and effects pedals, you'll still sound great.

ok my other option right now is an epiphone black beauty:

http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/epiphone-black-beauty-3/862

for £250, any opinions on this one? any one played one? which do you think is better this or the strat, downside to the black beauty is I'd have to order it on-line, I like the look of the epiphone better, but put off by not being able to see it, but I wouldn't know if it was crap if I was holding it to tell you the truth.

sorry guy to keep pestering you, I must be annoying by now. thanks for the help, just this is a big thing to me I want to get it right.

Keep pestering. Its what we're here for!

Personaly id go for the Epiphone, but thats only because i dont really like strats that much. but as a first guitar a strat is not that bad.
