I assume it's a guitar present? Is it electric or acoustic and how much do you want to spend?

Hi Blaze. Awaiting your comments on Jack's question but generally we tend to say to avoid packaged kits as they tend to represent poor value. No doubt we'll suggest a set up that is only a little more expensive and far more enjoyable to use.

I assume that the money is to include an amp?
Next question is to find out what sort of music she likes. Also is she left handed?

I'm going to stick my neck out and say a Vintage VS6 and a Peavey Vypyr 15. That will run to about £250 but there are advantages.
The VS6 is like a Gibson SG, so think in terms of Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton (Cream era), Angus Young and Tony Iommi.
Many people would suggest a Strat type guitar but I think the shorter scale and lighter design of the SG is better suited to a youngster. (and a Strat would be pushed to get near metal tones)
The amp will give anything from quite nice clean sounds to 'metal' distortion by imitating the sounds of various stage amps and effects.

Its great that today's beginners have such quality equipment to start on compared with what many of us oldsters had available.

I tend to agree with Lurcher. It seems a pretty good place to start.
The sounds she will be able to make will keep her interested and if the worst happens and she decides to give up she should be able to sell and get a good part of her money back.
