Hi

I have a Yamaha APX-4A electro-acoustic guitar which I bought about 13 years ago and I am ashamed to say it still has the original strings on - although it has hardly been used so I do have some excuse!!

Can anyone advise me which gauge strings would have been fitted as standard with a new APX-4A? I should like to buy some new strings and am not sure what to get. I am happy with the feel of the existing strings and would like to get similar. I have tried measuring the strings with a micrometer and the readings (I think) are 52, 42, 33, 24, 16, 12, but I am not sure whether I used the micrometer accurately so I may be slightly out on one or two of them.

If you are wondering why it has hardly been used, it is simply that I have spent most of my time playing classical guitar and I am afraid the steel string was rather neglected. But I am now becoming more interested in trying some jazz and I think the Yamaha might be quite well suited to that.

Hi and welcome to the forum \:\)

It looks like you have a fairly standard set of "12's" at present. Nothing wrong with that- it's what I use on my acoustics as well. So all you need to decide is what type of strings and what brand...

On steel-strung acoustics you can get 2 main types of strings:

-80/20 Bronze, which tend to sound bright and trebly, but often don't keep their sound so long
-Phosphor Bronze, which are not as bright from new, but keep their sound more consistently as they age.

I don't know much about the difference between acoustic brands, but eveyrone has their own favourite. Personally I love Elixir coated strings- they are 80/20 bronze, but with a very thin plastic coating that protects the strings from corrosion, meaning they keep that bright sound for a very long time.

I hope that helps- feel free to ask more questions! I'm reaching the edge of my knowledge, but I'm sure others can help where I don't know \:\)

I recently switched my acoustic to Martin 80/20 11s and was shocked at how bright and full they sounded for quite light strings. Easily the best I have ever used.

Many thanks to both of you for your replies and for welcoming me to the forum. I think I may well try some 80/20s.

A small query if I may. I seem to remember reading somewhere that electro-acoustics should be strung with phosphor bronze because of the piezo pickups. Are 80/20 bronzes equally suited to this type of pickup?

All rather academic really, as I hardly ever plug the Yamaha into an amp.
