Hey,

I've been strumming my acoustic for about 6 months and now moving onto wanting to jazz my style & playing up a bit.

So I have started these finger exercises, 1+2nd finger, 1+2nd fret up and down the strings and up & down the neck, 2+3rd finger the same, 3+4th the same also.

Here's my question.. The 3+4th finger routine is damn hard and my 1+2nd finger try to go a completely different direction. If I taped/bound my 1+2nd fingers to my 3rd, to keep them close, would this actually not train those fingers to stay put?

Is it better to train them without the binding or does the binding help?

Weird question I know..

Cheers
Justin

Hi and welcome. I've not heard of anyone taping their fingers up. To be honest, I don't think it would help in the long term, because you'd only end up changing how everything felt when you removed the binding.

I'm afraid perseverance is the only option..

^ what he said. That's really quite an unnatural thing to ask your hands to do (which is kind of the point...), which is probably why you're unconsciously trying to do something different.

I don't think the binding will help, simply because preventing your fingers from moving a certain way is not the same thing as training them not to. Also, I'm not entirely sure of the anatomy involved, but I'm pretty sure some of your fingers share tendons, so it's not possible to move certain fingers in certain ways without causing others to move too.

In fairness, that level of dexterity is something many guitarists will never achieve (and never need), and it's not something that's entirely necessary to play a lot of things. Like Stickyfiddle says, perseverance with regular practice will make the exercise easier for you, but learning that exercise in itself won't make you a better player- do it, by all means, but do it alongside learning some proper songs, scales, chords, music theory etc. Don't forget to use a metronome when you practice too, as playing in free time can give you a false confidence about your ability- I thought I was pretty good, but I was surprised at how fast I couldn't play when the metronome came in to play.

Ultimately, I think you've set yourself a pretty difficult task for a player of your level. Full marks for ambition, but don't be disheartened if you struggle with this exercise. It takes a lot of time and effort to get to the level of the really scary guitar players, and quite a while to be able to hang with the decent ones.

Your middle and ring finger share a tendon, try folding your middle finger into your palm and putting your hand down on the table so that your making a sort of rock sign, then try moving your ring finger. Can't be done \:P and otherwise ^^ What they said

That's a great trick, I've been using it to amaze kids for years! Just wrap it up in a bit of "I can glue your finger to the table" \:D

Regarding the original practice question, I agree with most of what others have posted, but just one extra tip... instead of trying to practice moving your fingers 2-3, 2-3 or 3-4, 3-4 etc., try 1-2-3, 1-2-3 and 1-2-3-4 to start with. It's much more natural an can help train your fingers' muscles (and "muscle memory")... effectively just do short chromatic runs in differnt positions and different strings. When you've been doing this for a while go back to trying 2-3 or 3-4 only.

In reality, do people ever use their 3rd and 4th fingers alone when playing?

I think like many musical exercises it's meant to train your brain-muscle connections and build muscle strength rather than being of much practical value of itself.

However, a guitarist obviously does need to have independent control over the four fingers, and these sorts of exercise will help to build that.

My recommendation would be to do difficult exercises extremely slowly but correctly. Bear in mind that every time you fluff the exercise, you're training yourself to do it the wrong way! This is the opposite of what you want. So it's better to go very slowly at first and get it right, than to rush in and get it wrong. Once you can do an exercise correctly but very slowly, you can work on increasing your speed. And this could take several weeks, so be patient. A metronome will help here, as with all musical exercises. It will help you pace yourself, and at the same time improve your timekeeping.

Good luck!

Dave

I have found many exercises and lessons over the years that help with this. The best is a good warm up exercise to strecth all the fingers and practice, practice, practice.

Try just doing hammer-ons and pull off with just the third and fourth fingers on frets 3 and 4. I have some warm up exercises here if they help.
