Hi everyone,

I am new member on this forum and recently became owner of Ovation 2006 collectors edition FKOA. The guitar sounds amazing unplugged but its about time to get some more gear for live performance and home recording studio. I already bought small Yamaha mw10c mixer which does not have Hi-z inputs. It can be connected to computer through USB.

Can you recomend some good gear for acoustic guitar setup.

What I currently have in mind is:

guitar - ????? - Mixer - PA - speakers

OR

guitar - ????? - Mixer - Computer and monitors

Do I need acoustic DI between guitar and mixer ex. Fishman Aura Spectrum.
Which acoustic effects do you recommend to get some nice sounds?
What do you think about TC G Natural?

Any recommendation is welcome as I don’t have much experience with acoustic amplification.

Regards

A decent 2x2 audio interface (such as an M-Audio or Line 6) will allow you to record vocals (mic) and guitar at the same time. I think the M-Audio device is circa £130. You may have something that already does that job.

A DAW package (I use Reaper) can be use to record. Reaper has a free trial period (unrestricted) for 30 days. Purchase price around £35.

If it helps I can document my setup for you to review.

The simplest answer in each case is a DI box. If the guitar has an onboard preamp that works well and sounds good, anything above and beyond a bog-standard DI is likely to duplicate what the guitar already does.

If the mixer can be connected to the PC anyway, I'd be inclined to ignore separate interfaces for recording and invest in a good quality mic- you can then mix the DI signal from the pickup and the mic together, which ought to get you lots of variations in sound.

If you don't really know what you want in terms of effects, I wouldn't advise spending all that money on a G-Natural, it's potentially a lot of overkill if all you end up wanting is a bit of compression and reverb. I've been really impressed with my POD Studio- it has lots of amp and effects modelling stuff that's more useful for electric guitar, but the POD Farm software has lots of studio effects- reverbs, compression, mic preamp models etc that will come in really handy for acoustic. It also comes with bundled recording software.

Alternatively, if you're in need of a software recording package, you can download Audacity software for free, which is a pretty good multitrack recorder and mixer.
