Hi there.
Basically I'm currently after a set up that I can be totally happy with. I used to use my Fender ultimate chorus for clean and overdrive sounds, then I got a Line 6 Pod XT Live. I liked the pod but had mixed results when actually using it with an amp. So many options for output and the eq being on the amp and pod so I just feel like going to individual pedals for a simpler set up. I've also become really fussy about my distorted sound.
I really want a good overdriven sound from a pedal, that will do a nice tight smooth classic rock sound. Not too fizzy and harsh. I want something that will sound good rolled back (not lifeless) but also nice when high up. It would also be good if I can push it from not crazily distorted (kind of chunky chord work) to searing lead with a compressor. On my pod my compressor effect increases my gain a lot but I don't know if real compressor pedals do it since I've never owned one!
If not I need something which can add to to the sound for my lead breaks, another distortion I guess, but I still want a good tone.
I will probably be mostly playing through a solid state amp. I also know that people say "overdrive" is supposed to push a tube amp and distortion actually creates distortion but I find a lot of distortion pedals too harsh (like a Boss DS-1) maybe I just can't get the sound I want without a tube amp.
I know people's opinion's will vary a LOT but any suggestions for me? I do check out youtube vids, I will want to try the pedal out myself but I tend to buy on Ebay to save cash so I want to at least have an idea of what I want. I do quite like the MXR pedals, especially the custom shop overdrive (GT-OD)
By the way, currently I have a Boss DS-1 which I find quite average and I'd only use it if I had no other options, and a Boss Metal zone which I got cos it was so cheap that I figuered I could sell it for at least the same price. Dont want either as my main rock tone and can't see them being a solo boost either. I do have an original Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal which I love but it's probably a little low gain for some of the stuff unless I get a really good distortion for solos. Plus it's a big pedal and I need to fix the switch.
Cheers for any suggestions!
