You can pick up a rat off Ebay for not that much these days. But i would recommend getting it modded back to how they used to be made with the original tin can LM308 chip. Some modders can add a 3 way selectable gain which will give you options for a smooth, crunch or low gain setting.
Something worth looking into.

I know this is an old post but if you've still got the DS-1 try doing the Keeley Seeing Eye and Ultra mods to it. You can get all the parts from Banzai in Germany (I couldn't find the right components in the UK all in one place). Can't remember the exact price but not much more than £10/£15 or so inc postage, depends on the quality of the switch you buy.
I've done a couple now, to be honest they are both completely different in sound (go figure!!?) but both are fantastic in different ways - the mods take away the fizz and add to the volume, I'm sure there are more technical explanations but I'm not in a position to offer them.
You can find all the instructions on line, pretty basic soldering/de-soldering skills needed (I managed it OK with very limited skills and absolutely no knowledge of electronics).
About half a day's work = great sounding pedal (hopefully). Worst case you've wasted £15, a bit of time and a pedal you don't like anyway.
Cheers, Richard.

Try a Boss SD 1 as a cheap option first..If you are going into the shop to try it..The Boss overdrive distortion can go from od to distortion and any point inbetween,,Need to look on myPedalboard..OS 2 is the number I think..It is a really useful pedal..Oh I can't stand the DS 1,,I still have it..the Rat I'm not mega Keen on either..Both have this hollowness going on,,not my bag..The SD 1 is warm,,The tubescreamer possibly too low gain for you ?? I have a Maxon OD 9 that sounds way better than my TS 808,,but both are low gain..

Hey Towser.
You haven't stated your budget, but it sounds like you're after something with a bit of grunt, without sounding too artificial.
My instant thoughts go to exactly the pedals I use- The Crowther Hotcake and teh ProCo Rat. The Rat is a fuzz/distortion with a lot of character- certainly a lot more interesting to my ears than anything Boss make.
The Hotcake is like a tubescreamer, only able to give a cleaner boost if you turn the gain down, but also wind the gain and presence up for more of a Marshall-type feel and sound.
If you wanted both of those options in one pedal you might want to try a Fulltone OCD also- so good I'm currently in the process of building my own version!
