A great chilled out album, sad though as Ali died a few years ago.

If you've not dipped your toe into world music it's a great place to start.

Now I wonder how difficult the Kora is to play?

Col

Kora? I think you have to be african royalty to play one

Have you heard Tinariwen? If you like african music, they're well worth a listen. They have quite a "bluesy" sound that's oddly familiar, but still totally non-western.

Yeah I know (well I've heard and seen) Tinariwen. Always looks funny seeing them in their robes, but holding a strat!

There's a great Taj Mahal album with Toumanu Diabate (Kulanjan) which really explores the link between Africa and the blues. Great stuff.

Tinariwen are really interesting and The Taj Mahal/Toumanou Diabate collaboration shows where the blues originated from. There are echoes of the Mississippi delta in modern African music and if you listen hard enough you can see the Rolling Sones on the edge of the picture...

At this point I am mindful of the fact that these great Africans and hundreds more musicians from all over the world would probably be toiling away unknown to us without the work of the recently-departed Charlie Gillett. His website is well worth a visit and I would like to say a big public thank you to Charlie for turning me on to a whole new world of music.

Descansa en paz Charlie.

Hear, hear.

I think I first heard Charlie Gillett sitting in for Bob Harris a number of years ago.

There's people working in the music industry/media who really care about the music. Charlie was most certainly one of those.

I just can't get in to Genesis. I've tried, but I just don't like them. I must have had most of their albums at one time or another- they turn up in the vinyl racks in charity shops fairly frequently, so I've given them a punt... the Peter Gabriel solo albums have stayed though.

Yes and King Crimson are probably my favourite prog-era bands (Pink Floyd too, but I don't tend to think of them as prog). The Yes Album is probably one of my all-time top ten- such an amazing band, and a great, great rhythm section.

Prog Britannia brought it all back the other week; The Court of the Crimson King on the stereogram, the waft of patchouli oil and the plaintiff cry of the parents, "turn that 'orrible racket down!"

Now I have that wonderful racket as loud as I bl**dy well like it. 21st Century Schizoid Man still rocks like a mother!

A few years ago I discovered Porcupine Tree and they scratch my prog rock itch nicely and I have In Absentia playing at the moment at a proper volume.
