S0d it, tell him to buy his own bl00dy electric guitar. Sponger.

So, a decent electric guitar, lefty with good availability. (Bearing in mind he's buying blind) circa £150 - any advice my lefthanded brethren?

Ouch. That's a pretty tight budget even without factoring in a potential upcharge for a lefty instrument.

If that was all I could spend, I think I'd be looking at Ebay and local classifieds- I've seen some pretty ridiculous deals on Cort guitars on Ebay, and if Richard's stock is anything to go by, they're pretty stunning.

A new £150 guitar isn't likely to be up to much, but you might try keeping an eye on your nearest Cash Generator (or similar) for a lefty among the slew of dirt-cheap Strat-a-likes they tend to get (I was in a **** place in Worksop last week that had several well under £100, including a lefty, IIRC), then sinking the rest of your budget into swapping out all the cheap and nasty hardware for decent stuff (pickups first, then tuners if necessary, switch the bridge for a proper steel one, put in some quality electronic parts...). Axesrus sell lots of reasonably priced drop-in bits and bobs.

You should get a decent instrument without it being ruinously expensive, but the problem with going the "partscaster" route is that resale value won't reflect the work and the cost of the parts that go in- whatever you do, it'll still be a Westfield or a Stagg or whatever, and you won't get any more money for it than you paid in the first place, so keep all the crappy hardware to put back on if you sell. You should be able to get some more mileage out of strat pickups at least.
