Plan is to remove all the acrylic and the finish down to the last grey primer coat (hopefully). will re-spray the red finish and wait for it to dry completely before finalising with the nitro ;\)

Bugger me what a busy few months... Finally managed to get the guitar to 2nd coat of red stage. Will be applying the head logo and the nitrocellulose tomorrow hopefully. Had to chisel out some space for the trem to allow more movement but seems a-o.k now.

Looking like a decent job there.

But I have to reiterate what Pete has already said, never mix nitro cellulose with acrylic, always keep it acryl-acryl or nitro-nitro.

To go with Pete's halford acrylic story. When I re-refinished "Scorchy", I sprayed it with an almost mirror like gold acrylic aerosol, and topped that with an acrylic clear coat. The problem with acrylics is they don't offer too much resistance to most physical contact, so the paint started noticably wearing. I opted to spray a nitro clear coat over it only to find it changing colour to a gold/green combo (almost like antique brass or something, it also lost it's shine).

Lucky for me I wasn't too fussed and kept it that way for a while, before opting to do a "Ross Finish" to it...

I suggest that if you have used acrylic, that you test some nitro on an unseen part of the guitar first to guage how it's going to react.

"Scorchy" - Customised Jackson DXMG. Scalloped neck, "Ross Finish", new wiring (including 1Meg pots).

"Oddball" - Rebuilt and heavily customised Encore strat. "Ross Finish", contour adjustments, new hardware and electronics, 1HB 1vol 1tone config, tone is also a sort of coil splitter, fretless.

No problem there mate, I sent the remaining acrylic off to buggerydoo. I used Plastikote super friendly gloss:

Now there's no remaining acrylic lacquer, just a re-done (from the very base coat up) guitar finish to the final red coat and all that remains is some proper NC! Got it from a guitar tech as well, no mistakes this time!

Ok, guitar completely Nitrocellulose'd and scheduled re-build date is the 28th June. Have placed the head logo and sprayed over with the NC and looks thusly:

As an aside, the guitar will be getting built with the following parts:

# Laser etched lic floyd rose vibrato with fittings, heavy duty version with brass block

#crunchy rails bridge and crunchy pat (Eddie Van Halen mod)neck humbuckers

#Grover mini rotomatic tuners (since the head is now a lot thinner)

#Custom wiring for led killswitch

I have a very intricate circuit design inside the guitar and have had to shave more from the inside to accomodate. The humbucker/tone/switch circuit is a standard 2-humbucker wiring scheme but in using a LED killswitch push button, I've had to work out how to start a battery operated circuit to light it when the lead is inserted and not have to rely on an external switch.

This is the result:

Can't say I'm 100% looking forward to playing with this aspect but we'll see how she blows!!
