Need something loud and cheap - not really much else to it, basically i don't have a bass amp for gigging with and need to get my hands on one sharpish on very limited funds. Any suggestions lads?

anything by Markbass is a must! they're lightweight, very loud, probably classed as medium priced, but if you have a look online possibly Ebay you might find one going cheap.
www.markbass.it
They have some serious meat behind them and will last a life time!

Markbass and 'very limited funds' are not words that are often found together.
What's your budget?

I love the look (and sound) of the Ashdown little giant 1000w, but what Cab am i going to need to output it to? I'm still fairly new to all this head and cab nonsense, the amp says Speaker Outputs: 4 Ohms, output power 2 x 500W RMS into 4 Ohms - can i output that to a single 4ohm 1000w cab?

what kinda size venues do you need it for? 1000w is a lot of power, have you looked at Genz-Benz stuff? Quite compact, fairly lightweight, good sound, bit cheaper than Markbass. What kind of style are you playing, is it for heavy metal, or pop, or jazz?

Don't buy a Little Giant. Those wattage ratings are very misleading in my opinion as it's not a LOUD amp.
I'd recommend an Ashdown Mag 600 head if you can grab one at a good price used, then a Peavey 4x10 if you're up to handling all that weight. If not then a single 15" or 2x10 would be okay, but nothing punches like a good 4x10!

Looking at a Fender Rumble 350 - What do you guys reckon? Anyone had any experience of one?

I don't think there's much need for HUUUUGE amps any more, even 4x10 seems excessive to me. I've got a 1x12 Markbass, which is rated at 400W at 4 ohms, or 500W at 8ohms. I've never played a gig where this was a problem. In fact, it's usually benefitted me. It's big enough that it will fill a 600 seat theatre, without too much of a problem. Yet it is still comfortable acting as an on stage monitor with a feed going to the sound desk. The DI is pretty reliable and is only post EQ, which I really like because it means the sound I hear is what the sound engineer gets. It even sounds pretty tasty with a mic instead. I've tried it with a 2x10 extension and the only thing I can say is that it pushes more air, the sound pretty much stayed the same, not really much louder, only more speakers. I think it's just as important to think about the loading in and out of venues, and if your transporting it much, how much space it takes up at home when it's being stored and if it fits in your car ok. The major thing for me is that lugging a massive amp round with me all the time is gunna do my back in, nothing worse than loading in to a gig, then not being able to play cause you can't stand up (before even getting to the bar).
I'd recommend having a look at Genz-Benz, they do a really cool series called the Shuttle, quite compact, has a slot on top of the cab for a small head, loads of power in quite a small unit. http://www.genzbenz.com/?fa=detail&mid=2258&sid=610&cid=95 Even comes in a 2x12 which looks quite nice. EBS do some relatively lightweight gear, as do SWR. Markbass do some supreme gear, which if you buy new is a little pricey sometimes, but if you look on Ebay there are usually some pretty good deals. the CMD 121p or CMD 121h are really good amps, and can be accompanied by a specifically designed extension cab. Even the Minimark http://www.markbass.it/products.php?lingua=en&cat=3&vedi=86 is a really good amp for smaller club sized gigs and rehearsals. It has a DI so can be hooked in to a PA, which again is a bonus. It is rated at 150W on it's own, but as a monitor that's plenty.
If you want smaller, there's another company called Phil Jones, again these aren't usually the cheapest first hand, but they're really good amps. http://www.philjonespuresound.com/products/?c=6
I've never been a huge fan of Ashdown, Peavey or Ampeg, don't know what it is about them, because I know they're all pretty well established as standards in the industry. Just never been able to find one I liked.
I do like some of the Fender range, but if you're looking at the Rumble 350, I'd also look at something like the SWR Redhead, even some of the Hartke range is pretty good. The HyDrive amps are looking quite good, at a relatively respectable price.
Hope that has given you a bit more useful advice.
