^ I agree- at least see how it goes. if you're a lefty, you're likely to be more dextrous with your left hand, and that's the one that has the harder job when you start out on a right-handed guitar.
As stickyfiddle says, you'll have a much easier time as a right-handed guitar player- much more choice, often cheaper, easier to borrow instruments from other players etc.

Minefield! You'll need to make all sorts of alterations to make it work- nut, intonation, fitting new strap buttons... If you were already an avowed left-handed guitarist I'd be less inclined to suggest you avoid that route, but as you're just considering starting out, I'd go righty.
Worst case scenario: you can't cope with playing a guitar the "wrong" way round for your brain and you decide to go lefty. You have a *right* handed guitar to part-ex or sell, which will be of interest to 90% of the population, not a lefty that you can only sell to 10%.

Interestingly, when I looked up "left-handed musicians" on Google, I found a list that included lots of "closet" lefties including Gary Moore, Mark Knopfler, Paul Simon, Sting, Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Bob Dylan and Noel Gallagher, who play right-handed guitars, alongside the "out" lefties like Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain.
Also interesting was the number of left-handed drummers: Stewart Copeland, Phil Collins, Ringo, Roger Taylor, Ian Paice...
and of course, there's:

"Given that when you start neither of your hands knows what to do I wouldn't have thought the difference would be that great "
Well, it is certainly true that a left hander can learn right handed. But it is equally true that some (most?) left handers have a preference/inclination to play that way round. Why, I'm not so sure, but my thoughts are it has to do with the fact you hold the plectrum with your left hand & using any tool feels more natural in your stronger hand.
When I was 11 and getting into AC/DC and early Iron Maiden I wanted a guitar. I always wanted to play left-handed (even air guitar) despite the fact all the role models played right-handed. The lack of provision for lefties and lack of availability eventually made me disheartened and I drifted away from the idea for over 20 years.
As for playing right-handed I have mixed feelings. It's not for me, but I understand why people do it as the choice of guitars is on a different level altogether. But I also think there would be more left handed models to choose from if all lefties played that way as there seem to be an awful lot of them that play right-handed, either through choice or situation.

i tried and tried to learn right handed and couldn't do it at all. eventually got a lefty and got into it within weeks.
it is right that my left hand is more dextrous which would make it make sense to play a right handed guitar, but then why don't right handed players use left handed guitars??
compared to 20 years ago (when i first tried to play) there are loads of left handed guitars available so why give yourself a handicap and try to play backwards?

For much the same reasons I suggested that a left handed player shouldn't- you'll get more choice, better value and better opportunities to sell the guitar later with a righty.
As I understand it, "handedness" isn't a black or white, lefty-or-righty determination, but a matter of degrees; some people are ultra-right-handed and utterly useless with their left, others completely left-handed and useless with their right, but most people are ambidextrous to a greater or lesser extent. Jimi Hendrix wrote with his right hand, and the list of famous "closet" lefties above should lend at least a little weight to the theory that it's worth giving a right-handed guitar a try.
Like I said, yours is the worst case scenario- you try playing right-handed, you can't get in to it, you sell the right-handed guitar to one of the very many right handed players out there, buy a lefty and accept the diminished choice and extra cost.
