but then why don't right handed players use left handed guitars?? For much the same reasons I suggested that a left handed player shouldn't- you'll get more choice, better value and better opportunities to sell the guitar later with a righty.
sorry, didn't explain myself very well. what i meant was that if left handed people should play a right handed guitar as their left hand is more dextrous, why in the first place were guitars designed the way they are. wouldn't it have made more sense to design them the other way round so that the majority of people were using their best hand for the intricate bits?
although the above sounds logical, it obviously doesn't hold true as guitars have been designed the same way since they were invented as far as i know. and i can't play a right handed one for diddly.
i've confused myself now.....

pakamak has a point - If anyone has any insight into why guitars were designed the way they are i'd be very interested, but then the older stringed instruments are the same so there must be some reason

I'm not sure how true this is but I'm sure I read somewhere (can't remember where - could even have been here in the dim and distant) that right handed guitars were designed to be fretted by the left hand because when they were invented the left hand only held down basic chord shapes with the right hand doing the intricate picking to create the melody.
As I say, I'm not sure whether that's accurate but it is logical.
Cheers, Richard.

There are lots of right handed guitars because the demand is high. The demand creates the supply, not the other way round.
I think the thought that lefties are at an advantage because the stronger hand is the fret hand is misguided. As someone else commented, if this were the case many right-handers would play left-handed. This would create greater demand and we would see more left-handed guitars. I've not heard many lefties propose this theory.
Richards theory is interesting. My own thoughts as to why it feels natural for to play left handed are loosely aligned, in that is to do with the use of a tool and the dominant hand is nearly always used to hold tools. Holding a pick isn't that dissimilar to holding a pen for example.

I do find that I have to really concentrate on which string I am picking/strumming.
I'm teaching the son of some friends (aged 8) and he's having exactly that problem. He's right handed, and playing a right-handed guitar.
I've suggested that for single string picking he should rest the flat of his hand on the bridge (far enough back that it doesn't mute the strings) to keep his hand in one position and help "navigation" when picking. As soon as he did that there was a marked improvement in his speed and accuracy. I don't mean that he turned in to Yngwie Malmsteen or anything- I'm still trying to get him to use more than one finger on his fretting hand- but it helped out a lot.
Of course, this won't work so well for strumming styles, but as the teaching books his school are using have only featured single note playing, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Sure, but creating demand for left-handed guitars one player at a time isn't going to change that any time soon. Probably never, since ultimately, left-handed people make up something like 10% of the population, so probably not much more or less of the guitar playing population (I could be wrong, and leftys could be vastly over-represented in the guitar playing world, but I think it's logical to assume not).
Even if every budding left-handed guitarist opted to play a left-handed instrument, they'd still account for a measly 10% or so of a manufacturer's (or a retailer's) trade, so it's not really in their interest to go out of their way to cater for them, hence left-handed people who choose to play left-handed instruments should do so in the knowledge that they'll probably always be stuck with paying a premium and limited in their choices.

Very true, but even 10-15% would be better than what is currently available!
