Purely out of interest.. what is the best pick-ups to use on my Hodson Surf-Cat... I am mostly going to be playing Rock/Grunge but... I also want to do some old skool rock n roll and blues at a later date.. the pick-ups on it at the moment are called 'AINiCO single coils' As a beginner they seem responsive and pretty clear to me but I'd like to upgrade them so the guitar is a good as I can possibly make it.. I dont want gold or diamonds lol... I just want the best actual pick-ups for the sound/s I am after Also I am interested to know since the guitar has 3 single coil pick-ups am I limited to single coils or could I upgrade to other types of pick-ups ? and how would this be done any and all info will be greatly received! - BURT KOCAIN

Alnico are good pick-ups,I just up-graded a Squier Strat I have to Alnico's and I'm well pleased with the result. I paid £33 delivered for Ironstone Platinum
this isn't me but some random fella on youtube using the same pups, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKjrkkCTyrI
you can put any pick-ups into any electric guitar really but you may have to chip away some wood to make bigger pups fit and/or carve your scratch-plate as well so be aware of that consideration when you when you buy. You can buy hum-buckers the same size as single-coils ,I have an artic hot rail in my Squier as well.A very good pup indeed for the £13 or £14 I paid for it,in fact so many guys in here up-grade pisck-ups I expect this thread will balloon soon.
Well done on sorting the photo's out too!!

Here goes the balloon.
Yep Alnico is the material the magnet is made from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alnico
Generally very responsive pickups. Single coils are a type of pickup that have a particular output. Strat single-coils have a clear, driving sound that will chime and punch through the mix. Different brands of Alnico v single coils will give slightly different responses, seymour duncan, bareknuckle and fender make great single coils but cost a fair bit. A good upgrade for stock s/cs would be tonerider, irongear, artec etc, all reasonably priced.
The other option you have, without re-routing your guitar/pickguard, is to have hot s/cs or stacked single coils=humbuckers (that look like s/cs but are essentailly two pickups on top of each other). I too have an artec (hot s/c)in one of my Guitars.
Humbuckers give a slightly harder, broader sound. They are more powerful, but this means you get more distortion/break up at lower volumes and less clarity.
You can mix and match single coils and stacked single coils.
For a halfway between single-coils and humbuckers you can get P90 type pickups. These are similar to what are used on jazzmaster type Guitars and some les pauls. The Hodson jazzcat has very good quality P90s (imo). I have tonerider p90s and really love them.
Hope that helps. A whole world of possibilities opens up once you begin modding your Guitars. Good luck. Glad to see your enjoying the surfcat...I'm tempted to get one now! Mike.

Is it better to have all double humbuckers (doubled up single coil type) in this case or is it best just to have one double humbucker and 1 or 2 single coils ? also where is the best place to position the double humbucker..and why?? - BURT KOCAIN.

You'll only know that when you try it,it's all personal really and should suit your style of play and what you want the guitar to do for you in terms of performance.
When the only guitar I owned was a Squier Strat with stock single-coils I put a hot rail hum-bucker in the bridge position of that guitar because I wanted a fuller lead sound to come from using the bridge pup on that guitar. Now that I have a PRS SE as well I will be replacing the hum-bucker in the bridge on the strat with a single-coil again as I can now get the HB (hum-bucker) sound from the PRS SE so it makes sense to me to have all single-coils in the strat again to allow greater flexibility over all the sounds my various Guitars can produce.

So basically a HB will produced a louder amplified sound? and so if I wanted to play more Rythem guitar I would want to place the HB inbetween the 2 single coils for a more rounded sound? - BURT KOCAIN
