Hey guys, I am total beginner when it comes to any kind of guitars and I would ask few questions and advices.
What is the difference between precission, groove and jazz bass guitars?
Basically I am looking for the best 4 string bass guitar that I could use to play mainly on my own. I am looking to spend around 200 pounds, is that a good price for a first one? I mean I dont want to buy some poor quality guitar, I would like it to be pretty good and universal when it comes to playing different types of music.
What would you advice me to get? Cheers

If you go to the Lakland site, you can hear samples of their basses. These are very expensive basses, but by listening to their precision basses and jazz basses, that should give you an idea of what these basic forms sound like.

Then, you can look for other reviews. Like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6Cd98DH__U
They cost a bit more than £200 new, but the Squier Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe basses are very widely recommended A Vintage Modified Jazz bass is £227 or £224 or something in one of my local shops.
If you're looking second hand, then the Aria STB series basses (both Jazz bass and Precision) are sometimes recommended as being good for the price. An owner told me that he considered his better than the Affinity series Squier basses, but not as good as the Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified basses. New they're well within your price range, and I've seen them go for utter peanuts (£60 or so) on Ebay.

There are an awful lot of bass models available. A bit of research (e.g. do you want short scale, solid or semi hollow, etc., how many strings, etc.) would help. I wish I'd done more research
Edit: Yamaha RBX170 is another choice in your price range.

Hi , On the subject of 1st basses, I have just bought a Hofner violin bass, The Beatle Bass !!! sort of bought it on a whim ! we are doing the beatles liverpool trip soon , so its all beatles at the moment. I play my sons P bass whenever i can, i dont suppose the violin bass will hold a note the same as a P bass as i have heard the sustain on a violin bass is a bit short. McCartney developed a style to suit his bass.. . . . . well it worked for the Beatles. any thoughts anyone ????
