I was looking at a Fane speaker unit in a shop, the guy opened it uip and it had Celestions inside. I thought Fane made their own speakers?

Perhaps someone had fitted some Celestions to an old Fane box, dunno, but it looked suspicious.

Fane did make their own speakers, but AFAIK (and I don't know much...) they haven't in a long time.

If it's an old speaker cab, it's entirely possible that the original speakers were damaged at some point and replaced with the Celestions. Nothing wrong with that in terms of keeping it *functional*- Celestion speakers are good quality and more than up to the job- just don't be conned in to paying collectable prices for it.

Fane are still very much in business, supplying speakers to a lot of PA companies and especially to Hiwatt, both with their Fane offerings and Hiwatt branded/designed units.
I have 4 200w Crescendos in my 4x12 cab but these are now long out of date.
I do remember them putting their name on cabs but that was way back in the 70's from memory. No doubt the unit in question has been re-built with Celestions, which would be better grade than the old Fane 'pop' series.

If my memory serve me correctly. Celestion speakers are still made in Ipswich, Suffolk and have been there for aeons.

It is possible that Fane have their speakers made under some trade licence by Celestion. Can't say for sure but that would seem logical as the Ipswich factory is enormous.
