As long as you're looking to branch out, why not start using software solutions such as protools, logic, or reason? Etc.
I find that this gives you a lot more flexibility. If you record something with analogue gear - then use software to add effects, etc, later, then you are stuck working with the initial sounds you created the equalization can't be changed, etc. But if you are using all digital effects from the get-go, then you can always change the equalization, etc. if you don't like it. guitar rig is a great solution for your guitar sounds, for example.
