Anyone see this morning's show? There was a discussion about women wearing the Burka. Bea Campbell (feminist and journalist) actually said in support of Burkas "they protect the wearer from the predatory male gaze/stare".

How fantastically offensive!?

Apparently, all males are predators.

How wonderfully insightful.

Bea's a ranting man-hater from way back. She obviously had a knock back or two when she was younger. I love it when those on the hard left get themselves in a bind by championing the rights of women (no bad thing) whilst at the same time defending the right of cruel, stupid men to force their women to cover themselves up lest some other stoneage man covets them. They resolve this by saying women make the choice of wearing a berka freely - yea, right.

My religion stipulates I must wear a balaclava at all times and if anyone in a bank gives me any trouble I report them straight away for being an intolerent bigot.

Just ban religions that cause civil / public unrest or use partiality as a means of indoctrination.

The thing is, Islam does NOT stipulate that women have to be covered up. Also, Many Muslims argue that praying with your face covered is offensive to God so it shouldn't be done. I don't have a problem with the head scarf but the burka/niqab should be banned in my opinion.

Surely the point is that, in western society, the only people who cover their faces are Baddies. Watch any cowboy film (where they also wear black hats). The purpose of covering one's face is to disguise one's true identity.

We should have no problem with a woman covering the whole of her body except her face. Nuns have been doing it for centuries. It's the face covering itself that offends.

A law that forbids covering one's face in a public place would be logical. What's the use of CCTV, speed cameras that snap drivers etc if you allow people to wear masks?

well, there goes Catholics and Protestants! ;\)

for all the stushy over burkas I have never seen one in public ever. As in ever, ever.

Apparently it is estimated that in France the law would apply against about 2,000 people maximum out of a population of 65 million. As was pointed out, it has nothing to do with Islam and more to do with outdated ideas of a womans place and French police have acknowledged that it could be very difficult to define when and how someone is breaking the law. Badly thought out laws are worse than no law at all.
