Get a mute, so you won't be so self-conscious about making screeching noises. Only cost a couple of quid. Also, as with any other instruments, but much more so with violins, listen carefully to what you're playing. In the absence of frets, getting every note pitch-perfect is not just a case of placing your fingers at the correct points on the fingerboard (although that undoubtedly helps!), but also hearing each note and making tiny adjustments with your fingers to get the pitch just right. Actually, not as difficult as it sounds, and after a while it becomes instinctive, almost before you actually bow the note, unless you're absolutely tone-deaf. Personally, the hardest thing I found was mastering vibrato, which is way, way different from finger vibrato on guitars. Good luck.
