Hi,
Have never done this before, so any help would be appreciated! Bascially, I have loads of film of my little boy growing up, that i'd like to burn to DVD to be able to play on a DVD player. Is there a free was of doing it? I've tried using Nero Lite (burning the file as a data file) but when I've put the DVD disc into my DVD player, I simply get unknown disc....
Help!

Hi Martin,
For your dvd player to be able to play films, the dvds have to be in a file format recognised by your player. The standard dvd format is DVD-Video. Some players will also play AVI, MP4 and DIVX. Data files are not recognised by dvd players. So, for starters, your films must be in some sort of video format, which it will almost certainly be if you have taken them with a digital camcorder. You then need to transfer the files to blank dvd using an appropriate converter/compressor program. You might already have Windows DVD Maker on your computer, otherwise you can download this free from the Microsoft Download Center. Other programs you could use are Nero Vision or PowerProducer. Good luck. Do come back if you have any problems.

Hi Elkay,
thanks for that! Unfortunately, Windows DVD maker doesn't seem to work with AVI files (which is the format i'm working with). It's quite a popular topic on blogs, so I'm sure it's not just me!!
I've just tried Power Producer but the trial version only allows you to burn 30mins of video...!
Any other ideas?

Hi Martin, PM me your address and I'll send you an old copy of PowerProducer I no longer need. It's a valid piece of software that came with an old dvd writer, complete with activation number, so hopefully you'll be alright with that.
Incidentally, I'm surprised that you can't get Windows DVD Maker to work with AVI files, as the one on my pc works just fine with AVI, and just about most other formats.

Hi Elkay,
That's really really nice of you! Thanks so much. I think part of the problem is that I'm running Vista, which is notoriously unstable with some other programs?

I use "DVD Flick". You can get it here: http://www.dvdflick.net/ I think it was free. It supports all sorts of file formats - see below - and it's ridiculously easy to use. I used it to burn public domain movies from http://www.archive.org and it worked fine.
