Hey, i'm looking for some advice on these 2 amps, i'm on a low budget.

I'm currently looking around for a new amp to buy, my first choice was the "Line 6 Spider 4, 120 watt or 75 watt". But now i'm looking at the "Marshall Valvestate 2000" series after previously using a Marshall Valvestate. The version i'm looking at is the 250 watt version with 2 rows of dials with many affects on-board. Where as the Line 6 Spider 4 is built out of effects, having around 300 presets and all kinds of other stuff on-board, but obviously it's a modelling amp, so it digitally copies the sound of a real tube/valve amp, where as the Marshall dosen't. Basically i just want some advice on which would be the best buy for playing mainly Heavy Metal, Heavy rock, to jazz and blues. If i got the Marshall it would be a very loud amp with built on affects and a valve amp, or the line 6 with lodes of affects, not as much power but also alot lighter in weight. Also i'd be purchasing the Line 6 brand new, and the Marshall second hand but in very good condition.

Cheers.

Just to put you straight. The Marshall is not a valve amp.
Quote 'hybrid amplifiers that accurately emulate the feel and response of an all-valve amplifier-without using any valves in the power state.'
I am not familiar with the costs of these amps but for what you want to play, the majority of users would go for a smaller all valve amp that will give you the best sounds. There are few venues where more than 30w of valve power would be needed without mic'ing up to the PA system.
My personal favourite right now would be the Hiwatt HG50 combo which can be had for a bit over £600. It has all the lovely smooth cleans you expect from a Hiwatt, but with a high gain channel that will give you what you need for metal.
Well worth considering if its not too far out of your budget.

Between those 2 I'd go for the Line6- I really wouldn't recommend an AVT. They're pretty horrible \:\(

Between the two...

If its just a toy for practising in the bedroom I might go for the Line6. To be fair to you, I havn't knowingly tried that specific version of the spider but I have tried its predecessors and they have been terrible, but you'll have lots of fun buggering about with all the models and effects assuming its as capable as the POD I owned a few years back. I wouldn't even consider this amp for playing live without first hand experience that this new spider is at least 800% better than its predecessors because every time I've seen one in a band setting its been mud city.
Best advice I can give, go to a store, try it out, but dont convince yourself you'll 'grow to like it' or 'get better sounds once you've dialed it in' - if you dont like the sounds there and then, run.

The marshall is decent for what it is. I wouldn't buy one without a view to replace the speakers though they're a bit naff and choke the sound at higher volumes. With a decent cab the AVT series is very acceptable for a gig in my opinion. Again, try before you buy, and dont buy this if you're really into your effects, its a budget circuit (although it doesn't sound cheap or naff by any means) thats only really useful for adding a bit of reverb/delay/chorus. The flangers rubish and you cant dial the effects in more than 50% with the original signal. The acoustic sim is a gimmik, but doubles as a useful mute button and having 3 channels with seperate volume controls is nice.

For the same money...well...you dont really say what your budget is. At the time of buying I could have had a laney VC30 for the same £££ I got my AVT for. That laneys a real valve amp, probably as loud as the marshall, most probably louder than the line6(muddy) and sounds sweet!

Check Ebay for prices on those two amps before buying they depreciate like mad. If your on a budget definately look at second hand, gigging gear is built a lot better than most consumer goods, its a safer buy and you might get something nice with power valves for what your looking to spend on a new budget amp.
I wouldn't be looking to spend more than £250 for an AVT myself. Thinking of selling mine coincidentally but you're a bit far away from me lol \:\)

Steve.
