The 'Squier' got another makeover last night... With a little help from FatBoyRelic parts it's gone from this:

To this:

This guitar has now had 2 bridges, 3 sets of saddles, 4 sets of pickups, 3 scratchplates, 2 neck plates, 4 necks, 3 sets of machineheads, 2 complete rewires... The only original component left is the body, and it looks pretty much the same as the day I bought it (save for a tasteful small Fender headstock where there was once a 70's style Squier one)

I'm done now. Honeeest.

Ha ha... now what does that tell you? lol

My new project for our workshop is building custom guitars from bodies and parts the customer orders etc. We have a couple on the go at the moment.

One is having a P90 in the neck with 2 single coils - all with seperate volume controls!

Another was brought in this week for us to assemble.

Will be bring photo tours of all this work over the coming weeks - should be interesting.

It tells me that even at 16 I had impeccable taste in guitars. Or that I'm a picky sod... Probably the latter tbh!

The guitar's had a huge amount of money passed through it, but the current upgrades haven't cost that much really- the neck would've cost a fortune but I managed to find a cheap CP60s to cannibalise, then sold the rest on Ebay. Even after fees I broke even on the body, pickups etc, and kept the neck & tuners \:D

I'd like to get it refinished in nitro one day, but that'll be a long way off!

The new workshop project sounds great. I've considered doing that kind of service in the past but never quite got past the pie/sky phase!

You say you've had lot's of different pickups. Which were best and why?

Started with the squier originals. Ceramic magnets. brittle tone and generally a bit horrible.

Next came some Fralins - Vintage 54 set I think. REALLY nice pickups I got in an axesrus sale. Absolutely fantastic pickups, but would work better on a maple necked strat I think, given their extra-vintage design.

Then I was tempted by the Fender Custom 69's on the CP60's I had. REALLY scooped Hendrixy sounding things. I actually just sold them last week to a chap on another forum. Very good pickups, just not quite what I like.

Now it has BKP Mothers Milks, which are spot on. Capable of jangly stuff, PERFECT "Nowhere Man" tone, lots of character and dynamics. Perfect for me \:\) They did a good Pink Floyd sound when the guitar had a maple neck too (see pic below!)
That sparkle has dropped just a little since getting a rosewood 'board again, but it's all good.

I also have them hooked up to a Rothwell Hot Little Knob - a push/pull for the 3rd control knob that lets you have bridge+middle in series amongst other things. It's a nice extra function to have up your sleeve, and looks totally discreet \:\)
