I recently inherited (for want of a better word) a guitar in a state of disrepair. I had thought it was a Gordon-Smith, and G-S Guitars kindly agreed to take a look at it. It turned out that once they had it in their hands they didn't recognise it as one of theirs after all, but agreed at least to get it working for me. Here are some pictures I would be very grateful if anyone could suggest what this guitar once was.

As you can see from the rear view, the body, neck, and headstock are all fashioned from a single piece of mahogany. The back-plate and pick-guard are new, specially cut for me, so please ignore them.

It has obviously had different machine heads fitted. You can see a serial number "003" and a year "1977" stamped on the back of the headstock. The front (not shown) seems to have had a maker's name scrubbed out.

No idea about the pups.

It's not exactly polished to concours standard, and there are chips here and there, but at least it works well.

Any ideas?

Looks like a homemade guitar to me but I'm no expert. It would explain the low serial number too. The headstock is made to look like that of a Gibson and I don't think they ever allowed any other manufacturer to make an open-book headstock.

You could be right, which may explain why someone else took it to pieces so readily. When I got it, by the way, there was an extra pot (without a knob) right in the middle of where the pick guard would go. It was a master volume, and I decided that it wouldn't add a thing to the sound of the guitar, and might even detract from it.

I was rather impressed, however, with the one-piece construction.

Does this mean it hasn't got a truss rod?

Perhaps we could have more clues.
Are those the original knobs?
Can you show us the pick gaurd with the volume control?
Are the dots mother of pearl or plastic?

Nope, it doesn't mean that. It appears to be tucked away just where you would expect it.

Knobs - your guess is as good as mine, but I would doubt it. They appear to be identical to those I have on my PRS Santana, so they could have been put on at any time.

There was no pick guard when I got it, as you can see from this rather fuzzy pic. The odd pot is the knobless one nearest the bridge...

... and this view of the back gives you a little insight into the odd wiring (again, sorry for picture quality)

The dots, unless my eyesight is going, do seem to be mother of pearl.
