Any idea what make of pickups?

It actually sounds okay. At present I have only played it through a little practice amp, but the sound is bright and toppy. The tone controls seem to have a muffling effect, rather than bringing up the bassy sound, but overall it's pretty good.

The pickups, well I couldn't see any maker's name on them, but here's a picture. Again, I can't swear that they're original.

Thank you. And also to Green Ninja for seconding.

Yes, me too - I liked it when I first saw it. It has a very attractive shape, and I liked the way it was constructed. It has dinges here and there, and still could do with a thorough clean, but it's a nice-looking guitar.

Looks very much like a double cutaway Les Paul Special..Headstock fretboard and shape incredibly similar.Might be that the owner upgraded from the Gibson cheap finish...Plastic tuners etc...Will try and find a usable link with picture

It does a little - but surely the bridge is wrong?

Although the shape of the headstock looks Gibson-ish, the place where the maker's name has been scrubbed out looks a little too small to hold the Gibson name/logo.

Hmmm...

Well, Initially I thought an Aria with a changed neck or replaced headstock.

MoP markers and one piece solid wood say quality - unscreened cavity suggests otherwise but maybe not at this date (assumes 1977 is not a red herring). The number suggests it might be one of a small number of prototypes for a manufacturing run...someone's attempt to copy a Melody Maker?

Anyway a web search lead to this - which looks like the very similar guitar

http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/other-gibsons/84468-gibson-melody-maker-1964-genuine-fake.html

But I can't find one with the combination of features yours had - its the large headstock that is the problem.
Gibsons all appear to have the narrow head as do the Memphis and Ibanez copies (e.g. 2344, 2343 has correct head but wrong body!).

Good Luck in your search...

It's not a gibson headstock unless it's had wood ADDED, which is very unlikely. That would also cut the value in half.

My guess is a custom or home build

I think that's what it must be. Anyhow, it works. \:\)

@ Tiggs, thanks for the comment and the link.

Also, Gibson don't do 24 frets very often at all. I can't believe I didn't spot that earlier!

Anyway- the important question- how does it sound??!! \:\)

Not bad, given that I have only played it through a little practice amp so far. The tone controls tend to have a slightly muffling effect - that's the only criticism I have of it - otherwise it has a clean, bright sound, sounds good with power chords. As the distance between the bridge and neck pups is small there seems to be a little less contrast between them, perhaps, than with a guitar with a longer span, but overall I am very pleased with it. \:\)
