Everybody around me seems to appreciate the Rolling Stones but they do nothing for me; I like a couple of songs but that's it. Overall, I don't like their sound (what a mess), the way they play, Mick Jagger's voice and it's a good thing for Keith Richards that I don't judge people by their faces.

Can anybody try to convince me that they're worth listening to?

I'm with you. I'm a huge Beatles fan but can't get into the Stones on the same level. About 10 songs are enough for me

Brown Sugar and Honky Tonk Woman do it for me but not much of their other stuff.

Yes. Decent singing and playing, innovative ideas for the time, unusual instruments and recording techniques, catchy tunes, no two albums sound the same and G-d bless George Martin!

The Stones were worth listening to back in the 60s but they haven't really progressed since then. They have one style, one sound, and that's it. The Beatles' music, in contrast, evolved amazingly over the years (with more than a little help from George Martin).

On the other hand, the Rolling Stones as a band has continued for several decades, and most of the original members are still alive and making both music and money. They must be doing something right!

I do like The Beatles very much. The vast range and variety of the music they produced is quite amazing.
I particularly like P.S. I Love You from the early stuff that nobody seems to mention.

I disagree, but only really on technicalities. The Stones took a while to find their one style, and did try out a variety of other styles on the way there (you can't tell me "Ruby Tuesday" or "19th Nervous Breakdown" sounds anything like "Brown Sugar" or "It's Only Rock & Roll"). However, once they found it, they've only really fiddled with the format.

Got to agree though- their style of playing is a mess (but what a mess) and Jagger is nowhere near my top five rock frontmen ("as sexy as a p!ssing frog", famously), singers or lyricists ("Under My Thumb" is pretty sickening), but when they do get it right (Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Women, Sympathy for the Devil...) they really do get it right. I wouldn't pay the asking price for their gigs these days, and I wouldn't utter their names in the same breath as the Beatles in terms of musical skill, influence etc, but I can kinda see what the fuss is about.

I like the Rolling Stones and I have done for over 40 years. I like them for introducing me to the blues and the riffs that have been great to dance to for years. No party was ever complete without Brown Sugar or Jumping Jack Flash or a dozen other examples. I like Charlie Watts's muscular drumming at the heart of so many hits that Charles Shaar Murray so eloquently described as being like a stoker shovelling coal into the furnace. As for sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll, well they invented it and for a while it was cool and anti-establishment at a time when that kind of stuff seemed important. They have never strayed too far from their roots and they have a sound all their own. So what? I can think of hundreds of bands and singers who have found their niche and stuck to it. I don't recall Sinatra doing many different styles or Metallica or Bob Marley etc etc. And what is this nonsense about what they look like? Who gives a toss what they look like? Why even bring it up? As a simple matter of fact Jagger has more notches on his bed post than any of us so he can't be that bad! I hope I'm in as good a shape as he is when I get to his age.

I have seen the Stones on a few occasions, in 1966 with Brian Jones, a couple of times in the 70's during the Mick Taylor years and lastly at the end of the 90's when they put on a really great show. The fact that they are pulling thousands to see them would indicate that they are still doing something right. I can recall reading of cynical reviewers who have gone to gigs in recent years openly admitting their surprise at how much they enjoyed the gig and ending up praising rather than burying them. At today's obscenely high prices though, I wouldn't go to see them or anyone else for that matter.

I don't particularly like what I read about Jagger or Ronnie Wood but it doesn't put me off their music which I still play when I want a bit of a knees-up.

In the grand scheme of things this matters not a jot and is merely personal preference. What does matter a little bit (and Giles this is for you!) is being open to to different things, music included. Giles, your original post gave a few reasons why you didn't like the Stones and then asked if anyone could convince you otherwise. The answer is no, never. You've already made up your mind and the barrier is up. I'm reminded of all the English people I used to know who couldn't stand olives. They'd never tried them of course and never would because they 'knew' they didn't like them. If you want to get into the Stones (or anything else) then forget about what they look like, ignore the critics and the supporters and me and everyone else and just give it a go. Sometimes your instincts will be correct but sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised and you'll open up new and interesting paths. As a practical exercise, I thoroughly recommend going to your local library and deliberately borrowing some CDs from bands or singers who you wouldn't dream of buying. When you find something good - as you will eventually - it will be because you have been open enough to try it despite your original prejudice and the world will be just a teensy-weensy bit better.

I'd give the goat's head soup a miss though if I were you...

Charlie Watts is the best thing about the Stones IMO. That dude could get your foot tapping just by walking in to the room.

Got to agree. I think Metallica fans everywhere would throw things at you for lumping them in with the Status Quos and AC/DCs of the world, but there really is nothing wrong with finding what you do well and doing it til you drop.

I thought Gilles said that just a little bit tongue in cheek. As for Jagger's "reputation"- in this day and age I think it would be more of an achievement for a man in his position to stick with one woman for life. Still, everything else about the Stones is stuck in the late 60s, so why not their attitude to women?

I get the distinct impression that Gilles has heard more than a few Stones songs and doesn't deserved to be accused of this level of narrow-mindedness. No, he probably can't be convinced to like the Stones by the musings of an internet forum, but he's not doing that in lieu of listening to them himself.
