1. You've already made up your mind and the barrier is up. [...] 2. If you want to get into the Stones [..] ignore the critics and the supporters and me and everyone else and just give it a go. [...] As a practical exercise, I thoroughly recommend going to your local library and deliberately borrowing some CDs from bands or singers who you wouldn't dream of buying.
Sounds as though my original post offended you as a Stones fan but that wasn't my intention so if it did, then I apologise. Please note that I was expressing an opinion, not passing a judgement on them.
Point 1 above: emphatically not, which is why I was hoping somebody would point me in the right direction as to why they like the Stones (hence my question), which you did at the beginning of your post. I must confess that for many years, I was prejudiced against Genesis (Peter Gabriel era) and they are now one of my favourite bands. Since then I have tried to keep my mind open, which is why I was giving the Stones another chance.
Point 2: that's exactly what I do, albeit at the library but on Spotify, but there is so much Stones material to go through. I have discovered many artists that way that I would never have listened to before. I guess I must try and ignore the aspects of the Stones' music that I don't like and appreciate the rest.

as sexy as a p!ssing frog From now on, I'll make sure I leave the toilet door open when there are ladies around!
Mais non, monsieur! The amphibious sort of frog, not the french kind
There is another way of getting the ladies moist while you pee, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Interesting topic. As someone who was a teenager in the 60s and an avid record buyer for half a century (!), I have occasionally wondered why I've never bought a Rolling Stones record. For me personally, I found the sloppy, loping, untidy style just not my cup of tea, altough I do remember as a youngster enjoying one or two of the singles, particularly 'Little Red Rooster', and in the many bands I've played in over the years I've enjoyed playing and singing 'Honky Tonk Women', 'Brown Sugar' and 'Jumping Jack Flash'.
Their untidy style is wonderfully held together and complemented by Charlie Watts' simple and solid drumming which always feels a nanosecond behind the beat, and I believe they would be nothing without him. Thinking about it, I also never liked the timbre of Mick Jagger's voice, but again, that's a personal thing of mine.
Songwriting-wise, they've come up with some monsters (c.f. those above) which will last a very long time indeed, but their albums that I've heard seemed to me to be padded with forgetable noodlings to make the time up.
Aside from technical considerations we must acknowledge that a large part of pop and rock music is related to mojo, sex appeal, mystique, call it what you will, and the Strolling Ones have certainly had that in abundance for decades. And after such a long period that mojo becomes legendary and the next thing you know a national institution is born.

I was very surprised by the original Howlin' Wolf version of this song when I heard it. The Stones version is very deliberately primitive and rough, in what I always imagined to be imitation of the blues artists they admired (read: copied)- you know, "we could do it "properly", but we're going to do it how they do it".
Howlin' Wolf's version is actually very slick, and to my ears, much more sophisticated and much better than the Stones'. Maybe they were just rubbish

I think you've probably hit the nail on the head there. More myth than talent, more headlines than hits (Keith falls from palm tree, Bill Wyman marries schoolgirl, Keith has drug-free blood transfused to get in to america, Ronnie Wood runs off with schoolgirl- see a pattern?- Mick sh@gs everything that moves, dumps old wife for younger model, rinse and repeat, peeing on walls, drugs raids, mysterious deaths, mars bars...)

The Rolling Stones like all good bands get things spectacularly right at times and like all good bands with prolific output get things spectacularly average too.The interesting thing is when various members have produced individual efforts the results have been pants.I had hoped to forget "Je suis un rock star" a more heinous crime than Mandy Smith Mr.Wyman.Jagger without Richards and vice versa is for the die hards only.Saw them at Wembley some years ago and they were very good indeed.Jagger took a break after an hour leaving Keith in charge for three songs...Cue 80,000 to the lavatories and bars. That speaks volumes.
