Their untidy style is wonderfully held together and complemented by Charlie Watts' simple and solid drumming which always feels a nanosecond behind the beat, and I believe they would be nothing without him. Charlie Watts was a jazz drummer before he joined the Stones, and he still plays jazz for his own satisfaction. His drumming, even in the Stones, is very characteristic of jazz in that he plays in a swing style. This is in contrast with rock styles which generally don't swing. (Although blues often does.) So you have the swing rhythm working against the squarer rock rhythm, which explains the "nanosecond behind the beat" effect. AFAIK this is unique to the Stones although it could easily be copied.
The Wikipedia article on Watts says:
There are many instances where Jagger and Richards have lauded Watts as the key member of The Rolling Stones. Richards went so far as to say in a 2005 Guitar Player magazine interview that the Rolling Stones would not be, or could not continue as, the Rolling Stones without Watts. The Rolling Stones are a good example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. That was true of the Beatles too, I think.

The year 1964. Age 6 and 3/4s The location? School playground. The question... The Beatles or Rolling Stones which one do you like best? Your answer determined if you got a shin kicking from older boys or not. Ah those were the days.
Oddly enough the Rolling Stones allegedly employ about 600 people in their empire, so that is why ticket prices are way too high.
Every Sunday Pub Band in the UK plays a Stones and or Beatles song at some point in their career and dare I say they mostly get them wrong, as an example, the little widley mid point solo in 'Get Back' is often done not quite right. (see John Lennon play it on the roof at Abbey Road on yootoob)
That is pretty much the same with Rolling Stones songs because in a lot of pub bands there is only one guitarist and the Stones have three if you include an overdub or even Mick Jagger playing too. He does strum a bit apparently.
Are they any good? Hands up anybody who hasn't at least tried Honky Tonk Women or something similar at home some day.It surprises no one that they are still around because millions get nostalgic about them too often. I know I do, hence opening comments in this reply... Ah!

Angie, Cant always get what you want, Sympath for the devil. All very nice to listen to. Its not guitar music though!
They're actually the songs I like. Interestingly enough, when I was in Scotland the week before last, the cottage we stayed in had a DVD player and a selection of free DVDs from the Daily Mail. One of them was Jean-Luc Godard's "Sympathy for the devil", which - between Godard's usual nonsense film scenes - shows the Rolling Stones in the studio in '68 recording the title track. It was interesting to watch and I grew to like the song. I guess the Rolling Stones are an acquired taste.

If anybody loves the Rolling Stones and you find yourself in London, visit Bill Wymans restraunt "Sticky Fingers" in Fillmore Rd. Its stacked with memorabilliar (I think I spelt that wrong) as long as the place isn't too busy they let you in for a look. It includes a Brian Jones Gibson Les Paul and several of Bills basses.
