Hi there,
Had the above amp for years but have limited technical knowledge and have never really got it to sound the way I want it to. Looking for advice settings to get a good blues/rock sound, something like AC/DC would be the kind of thing i'm after.
Alternatively, shall I jack it in and buy a line 6 spider 4 which seems to have this exact sound pre programmed.
Cheers in advance for any suggestions
Matt

Line 6 amps seem to have a pretty horrible reputation for live playing- lots of reports of excessive muddiness and inability to cut through a band mix. Might be down to people relying on presets designed to sound good in isolation of course...
Sticky's EQ and gain settings should get you in the ballpark. You never need as much gain as you think you do.

I think the main problem with line6 is how e_b describes- the presets are there to mimic tones found on completed, mixed records, rather than the sound that came out of the amp in the studio that was then micced up, compressed, EQ'd, compressed some more, then mixed and mastered...
I suspect there's also an element of a lot of people buying line6 because they want options, rather than because they have a specific sound they REALLY want to make, and then don't have a clear idea of exactly the tone they even want, never mind how to get there

^ exactly. It may well be that if you were to get rid of some of the extra guff you'd be able to get a good live sound. If you can get rid of it, that is- should be possible on the models where you have deeper editing capabilities, but might not be on the simpler Spiders.
Of course, getting rid of all the guff might mean that you don't need a modelling amp any more...

That's much better thanks, current settings are;
Pre gain - 6 Low - 4 Mid - 7 High - 7 Post Gain - nearly 1 or the walls shake!reverb - 2
Does that sound about right?
Cheers

I had a bandit with the Sheffield speaker in it circa 1997. I found I had to have the Middle up for a fuller sound. It does metal sounds reasonably well and harder rock tones but vintage blues is difficult Very loud at home and it coped well at smaller gigs without being miked up.
I eventually traded it in for a TF50 Laney which is (IMHO) better for a more traditional vintage blues sound but even that amp in now 10 years old and I may upgrade it to a VC30 or a Marshall Haze 40 watt amp.
As already said your ears are your best tools for deciding you tone. As a question for a greater answership...
Ahem! Why is it when you set an amp up one day it sounds the business and you do absolutely nothing to change anything I mean nothing aside from turning it off and the next time you switch it on and start to play it sounds like a duffer? That is weird yeah? Why is that? Over to you lot...
