OK, a bit off the wall here, but I was wondering if I could use my now redundant 100w Carslbro as a PA system. I guess it all comes down to the power output of a mic vs that of a guitar. Anyone got any experience doing this?

PA amps/speakers and guitar amps/speakers are pretty different.

guitar amps are designed to give a certain sound to a guitar (which is why a Marshall doesn't sound like a Fender or a Vox or a....), whereas PA systems are just to make something louder without effecting the sound. For example no overdrive and a pretty flat sound.

From experience guitars sound rubbish when played straight through a PA, and likewise mics would sound wrong comming through a guitar amp.

For anything serious? No.

For practise/jamming - maybe, for a garage band that doesn't jam too loud it would work.

Not with the stock speaker though. The problem is that guitar amps produce lots of real high frequencies when they distort which are attenuated by the speaker, producing a balanced sound. Its one of the reasons that the speaker makes such a difference to the sound of electric guitar.

The speakers' frequency response starts rolling off in the upper mids and has no actual 'treble' whatsoever.

If you have a PA cab kicking about you can plug into it instead of using the stock speaker it might be acceptable. Then again, just try it, it might be good enough for your purposes.

A standard cheapo mic with a 1/4" plug should work...but it'll be pretty crap for feedback. You could get a real mic and a XLR to 1/4" plug adapter, I'm not sure how much output you'd get out of it though.

At the end of the day, a cheapo mic and the stock speaker might work...it really depends on how loud you jam. We did it in a pinch to start with, heck 100w would be better than we had to start with. But theres no way it would work for us now.

Vocalists eh? ;\)

Steve.

@Scrooge

Yeah, thats all I was thining of. (In fact the speaker I use with the Carslbro is actually an old night club speaker with a twin cone, so it might be OK.) Its only for use farting around. The band has all the kit, mixing deck, mics PA, etc, but I am in Luxemberg for a few months and I jam with a basist in the house I am co renting, so its only a temp lash up thing I am looking for. Trying to sing loudenough over a guitar and bass is impossible with an unamped voice!

Mind you, my voice is pretty iffy at the best of times. \:\( \:\)
