...gotta say, it sounds great. My Boss distortion box is totally redundant, the amp can produce all the distortion you can want, better. The fuzz box is interesting in the loop, it boosts the bass and gives a more crunchy sound, so that stays.
Scooping the sound, middle down, bass trebble up, is really efective. I never had an amp that actually responded so well to the tone controlls before.
I like the Reverb, and the subbtle presence and dmping effects, too, they all stay on at around 25% which adds a touch of richness to the mix.
And surprisingly, it does all this and gets feed back, at reasonable volume levels (as in the dial is on the 1).
The texture knob on the back of the amp is interesting, and subtle too. Grungy to quiet to smooth is how I would describe it (from full right going counter clockwise).
Oh, and the volume. This thing is scary loud. Stand in front of it playing at half volume and it actually hurts your bones!.

There is a youtube demo by a Peavey guy, which is good.
As for how they compare, I cant say, I havent got anywhere near enough experience to say, but they are cheap, and thus with some mods, such as new vavles and speakers, you can aparently get as good as a marshal or vox for less money.
Its my first valve amp, so naturally I am in love with it!
But I cant say more than that!

If I was going to do any amp again Peavey would be top of my list.

I like my VK 212 too. No FX required (but nice to have).

I have been fond of mine quite versatile, I especially like the cleans, and the high gain really can be good, new preamp tubes can improve things I can only assume better power tubes make some improvements too...
It's far more forgiving than my laney is though and hides more mistakes...
