Hi all,

I've been involved in music for over 20 years. I am currently most busy as an Audio Mastering Engineer.

I left guitaring about 8 years ago selling a high end Ibanez RG, Laney VH100 head and cab, Digitech and Rocktron effects racks.

I have a very capable DAW, and plan to simply plug my guitar into the input on my pre-amp/audio interface, and use all plugins in a sequencer (Cubase) to get my guitar sounds for playing at home.

But where do I start? I need a decent overdrive, distortion, and speaker simulator. (Everything else is taken care of).

Can anybody recomend decent plugins to enable me to get the sound I used to get.

Any help/advice would be great, I am looking forward to getting playing again.

Kind regards,

Shayne

Hi Shayne,

Are you using PC or Mac? The reason I ask is I've got a buddy on another forum who is big on PC based recording and seems to have tested every free VST under the sun. However he only knows PC.

Either that of have you considered guitar Rig or Amplitube? I'm a GR user and love it. Great amp and effect models and very customisable.

I am PC based.

I've got very high end plugins (Waves, Sonnox and Audio Ease amongst a few others), so things like delays, EQ and Reverbs etc are not a problem. But I have no plugins that offer a "guitar amp and distortion sound".

I've been browsing, and I think the Line 6 Pod series appear to offer exactly what I need.

Would that sound right, I remember the first of them being released around the time I was hardly playing at all.

Can anybody confirm if they do what they say on the tin?

Kind regards and many thanks.

I strongly recommnd you try the demos of Amplitube3 and guitar Rig first. I went for Amplitube3 as guitar Rig sounded fizzy and digital, on my system anyway. August's Sound On Sound magazine reviewed and highly rated Magix Vandal (from the makers of Samplitube), as they reckoned it had the best response 'feel' so far of these sort of applications: Link to Magix Vandal Site

The concensous of opinion, from what I have read, is that GR and Amplitude are better than the pod.
Check with the guys at:

(I prefer a real amp with a '57 in the crease)

in my experience amplitube is realyl really good. But obviously it requires a fairly decent computer and a good audio interface to avoid latency.

I run a POD2 which I will definitely upgrade at some point, but it's good for the price- plug in and play and I'm not tied to a PC. But probably not so good on the effects side of things.

I don't know specific plugins well enough to recommend anything I''m afraid

Don't know if this will help but I ended up buying a small peavey modelling amp. I couldn't find good cheap plugins to use for my guitar and found the Peavey VYPYR 15Watt modelling practice amp a brilliant bit of kit. It has lots of different amp simulations on it and it’s not too dear. It has a record out port on it that I plug straight into my audio interface. I have recorded a few songs with it that are on my site (I'm no Eric Clapton) and they are better than my first attempts using plugins.

Check out my sig for a link to my songs the first songs are my most recent with the Peavey.
