Hi there,

I have a cheap electro-acoustic - an Ashton SL29CEQ. They retail for around £150 new. I have had it for about 18 months. It has never been setup as far as I know. I get a lot of fret buzz, but I put this down to me still learning.

A few months ago I had the saddle replaced because the strings were cutting into the old one. The shop just used a plastic off-the-shelf saddle and swapped them out. It didn't fit quite as well, but the guitar still plays okay.

Now it is time to replace the strings and I am wondering whether to take it into my local guitar shop for a service. As well as new strings this will adjust for intonation/truss rod etc. The cost is £59.

Is it worth it, given how cheap the guitar is? Should I go for it or just carry on until I can afford a better guitar?

Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Don't under estimate the effect a decent set up will make to any guitar.

Ideally, your guitar should have come set up already, from whichever store you bought it from, but I'm guessing that didn't happen.

I do think £59 for a basic set up is a bit steep. Strings are only £5 - £7, so £52 for a basic set up seems a little high to me. Have you tried shopping around? I've seen set ups for £35-£40 mark which seem about right.

Is it worth the cost given the guitar's reasonably cheap in the first place? I don't know! I've never played the particular guitar you have, so can't judge if it's worth it or not. However, you can pick up a Cort Earth (fantastic entry level guitar)from Richard's for £170 fully set up!

Whichever way you choose - good luck!

Morning Wayne,

I'd say yes, yes and yes.

Again I think the £50 odd is steep and would suggest you get on Yell.com and to see who's about. I live in an area with very few guitar/music shops (even fewer who offer tech services). I was amazed at how many techs were in the area under instrument repair. Many have very good C/Vs and feedback.

Just had mine setup and it was £36.50 including the strings which were £6.50 i think

Newbie myself, I have got the Vintage V400n which was around the price of your guitar, (£139 i think i paid)

It is much better now, although i did get the strings lowered which makes playing a hell of a lot easier.

Still crap at playing it mind, but will get there. \:\)

Thanks everyone. I will have a look around to see if there is anyone who could do it for cheaper. I live in Poole though and there are not many guitar places other than guitar Mania (who offer the £59 service).

Hmm... Oh well. A look at Yell indicates I don't have much choice in my local area. There is one a place around 25 miles away that costs £45 + strings for setup. Might as well stay local though at that price.

Try Oasis out at Ringwood, there's a guy over in Christchurch too but I can't remember his details, If I can find them I'll post them. I had a problem with a Cort 12 string and when I spoke to the guy in guitar mania I wasn't satisfied with what he had to say in terms of what they'd actually do in the setup that might remedy it. In the little arcade up in Westbourne there's a guitar shop and over in Boscombe there are several. Poole is useless for guitar shops and you have to hunt around a bit but there are some good local resources in the boroughs to the west.

p.s. Not in Poole anymore but was until a few months ago.

You not wish to try giving it a go yourself? Fairly simple to do, and some of it is down to preference like the action for example.
